The BBC News website is one of the world’s largest and most popular news sites, with mobile and desktop editions aimed at different geographic audiences, plus both UK-facing and International-facing apps. 


We are looking for a creative video journalist to join our dynamic digital news team in Sydney. The role is globally focused – meaning you will work closely with teams in London, Singapore, Washington and elsewhere on the biggest and most interesting global stories of the day.

Main responsibilities

Your main duties will be to edit and produce global news video, including short news clips, explainers and features, for our coverage on the BBC News website, app and other platforms. You will also prioritise finding inventive ways to help drive our video coverage in Australia and Asia.

You will also be responsible for:
• Exercising editorial judgement in identifying the most engaging videos for our audiences, and creating accurate and impartial journalism
• Liaising closely with team members in Sydney and other BBC locations to assess the day’s news priorities and produce the highest-value videos
• Using video editing software to edit and deliver output for BBC digital platforms, to the highest professional standards – recognising the distinct requirements of different types of output
• Writing brief but highly engaging copy and headlines, and selecting the right stills, to accompany your videos
• Securing and producing the best material by working closely with BBC teams across the globe, as well as utilising wire services, your own contacts, the internet, social media, and proactively sourcing rights
• Getting to know our different audiences inside out and offering ideas for reaching more readers, looking especially at opportunities in our timezone
• Delivering to tight deadlines and communicating effectively whilst maintaining the highest editorial standards

Are you the right candidate?

The successful candidate should have a knack for spotting and developing compelling video content. You will be able to write clearly and accurately and use photographs, graphics and video to bring stories to life. You will also be a self-starter who can generate ideas whilst remaining calm under pressure and working collaboratively with others.

The ability to cut and edit video to tight deadlines is essential, as is the ability to use editorial judgement, creativity and flair.


Our journalists are also expected to use data analytics to make sure our reporting is accessible and reaching as wide an audience as possible.


We are looking for someone who has:
• Proven experience of producing fast-paced, digital-first news coverage in video for online platforms with attention to accuracy, context and tone
• Experience of spotting, producing and devising news video that will appeal to digital news consumers
• A proven capacity to generate ideas that will help bring in new audiences and broaden our editorial agenda
• A demonstrated record of working swiftly and making decisions under pressure
• Experience of covering Australia and/or the international news agenda
• Familiarity with using social media, search and audience data to improve storytelling
