As an Education Assistant - Auslan, you provide the highest level of access to the curriculum for Deaf students with sign language interpreting and teacher directed tutoring, according to the needs of the students. The successful applicant would assist the teacher in delivering planned education programs and encouraging a supportive and inclusive learning environment. The successful applicant may be involved in team situations, work under limited supervision, and may be required to engage in consultation and provide feedback. The role may require discretion in problem solving, decision making, and choosing methods and processes to achieve educational outcomes that are determined through consultation with the teacher, or other professionals.
The successful applicant will ideally have good written and verbal communication skills, be able to work well as part of a team, and have a good understanding of the issues affecting deaf or hard of hearing students. You should have the ability to show initiative in completing tasks combined with strong interpersonal skills to build relationships with students, staff, and families. You will be part of a team of experts that includes the Visiting Teachers of the Deaf and other Auslan staff.
Joseph Banks Secondary College (SC) is an Independent Public School in the suburb of Banksia Grove, approximately 40 kilometres from the Perth Central Business District. We serve students from surrounding suburbs including Carramar and Tapping. Students are given a number of pathways on which to excel during their secondary education, including both curricular and extra-curricular programmes.
This selection process will initially be used to fill the above vacancy. Applicants assessed as suitable during this selection process may be considered for other similar vacancies that occur throughout our school for up to 12 months following this initial appointment. This includes circumstances where this position becomes subsequently vacant should the successful applicant decline or vacate the advertised position.
To be suitable for this role, you will need to demonstrate the following work related requirements (selection criteria):
Well developed oral and written communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to interact with Deaf or Hard of Hearing students, liaise with parents, teachers and community members and where necessary assist teachers in understanding students. Well developed organisational skills, including the ability to contribute to a professional team and deliver an effective education program. Knowledge and understanding of issues relevant to deaf or hard of hearing students.Applications will be assessed against these work related (selection criteria) of the position.
