The School of Biotechnology and Biomolecular Sciences is a preeminent life sciences education and research hub with the broad aims to excite, educate, inspire and advance knowledge in molecular biosciences to address real-world challenges and create opportunities. The purpose of this new exciting combined track Teaching and Research role is to conduct independent research and deliver excellent teaching into the School with a particular focus on biotechnology. The successful candidate will have a strong interest in translation, evidenced by industry connectivity and/or experience, and will have a research vision that aligns with a biotechnology perspective. This perspective can encompass any research that broadly aligns with the School’s ambition to advance translation and or knowledge in molecular biosciences including microbiology. They will also have a clear vision to educate the next generation to prepare them for an exciting career in biotechnology.

The Lecturer (level B)/ or Senior Lecturer (level C) academic is expected to carry out activities to develop their scholarly research and professional activities both nationally and internationally and to contribute significantly to achieving the teaching and service missions of the School and Faculty.

About the role

Level B ($119 - $140) Level C ($145K - $166K plus 17% Superannuation and annual leave loading Continuing Full-time (35 hours per week)

The role of Lecturer/Senior Lecturer reports to the Head of School and has no direct reports.

Specific responsibilities for this role include:

LEVEL B:

Conduct research of high quality and high impact, including attainment of competitive government and industry research funding and publication of outcomes in high-quality research outlets. Deliver high-quality teaching and student experience utilising sound pedagogical methodologies and innovative technologies and, from time to time, deliver teaching across a broad science discipline. Lead or support the coordination of undergraduate courses on biotechnology and related disciplines. High-quality supervision of honours and postgraduate research students. Actively engage with industry and the community to develop significant productive relationships, attract industry funding and participate in professional activities. Work collaboratively with peers across the Faculty and UNSW in all aspects of academic endeavour and contribute to mentoring of other staff. Involvement in broad administrative functions of the School and/or University, coordination of subjects, attend departmental and/or faculty meetings, involvement in Open Days and recruitment activities and play a major role in planning and/or committee work or other responsibilities, as directed by the Head of School. Align with and actively demonstrate the UNSW Values in Action: Our Behaviours and the UNSW Code of Conduct. Cooperate with all health and safety policies and procedures of the university and take all reasonable care to ensure that your actions or omissions do not impact on the health and safety of yourself or others.

LEVEL C:
(in addition to the above)

Play a significant role in research projects including, where appropriate, leadership of a research team. Obtain research income from nationally competitive research grants (and/or research fellowships) and research end-users as a member or leader, at or above the level that is relevant to the discipline in leading universities. Direct the enhancement and refinement of the Bachelor of Biotechnology program in collaboration with others. Apply critically reflective teaching practices and provide assessment and feedback at both course and program level. Attract peer recognition and establish research network/s at the international level.

About the successful applicant

To be successful in this role you will have:

LEVEL B:

PhD in biotechnology, molecular biology, genetics, microbiology or related area. Demonstrated track record in research with outcomes of high quality and high impact with clear evidence of the desire and ability to continually achieve research excellence as well as the capacity for research leadership. High-level communication skills and ability to network effectively and interact with a diverse range of students and staff. Demonstrated ability to work in a team, collaborate across disciplines and build effective relationships. Willingness to undertake any compliance and supervisor training as required. An understanding of and commitment to UNSW’s aims, objectives and values in action, together with relevant policies and guidelines. Ability and capacity to implement required UNSW health and safety policies and procedures.

LEVEL C:
(in addition to the above)

Demonstrated ability and willingness to deliver high-quality and innovative teaching and student experience to both undergraduate and postgraduate students. A track record of significant involvement with the profession and/or industry. Experience in successfully recruiting and supervising high-calibre students. Experience in implementing educational technologies and online delivery methods Experience in designing and implementing other educational activities and/or outreach activities Demonstrated ability to interact with the profession and industry and attract funding industry-linked funding for research and training. Demonstrated experience with curriculum development and work-integrated learning initiatives. Demonstrated experience in teaching and learning design using a range of pedagogical approaches, development and delivery of courses and programs, at undergraduate and/or postgraduate level.
