About the Role
The Business Intelligence (BI) team transforms data into actionable insights, empowering Victorian communities to stay prepared for and protected from fire. By delivering high-quality, accessible data and information, the team supports informed decision-making across various stakeholders, including community programs, project leaders, brigades, media, emergency sector agencies, the Board and the Minister's Office.
The Data Engineer is tasked with configuring and managing Business Intelligence databases, data warehouses, Data Marts, and web services, ensuring data is readily accessible to users. This role is crucial in developing the foundational platform that supports future technologies, spatial data libraries, online mapping applications, and web services. The Data Engineer plays a key role in maintaining a resilient, adaptable platform that offers traceable, user-friendly and cost-effective data solutions for the CFA.
Key responsibilities of the role will include the following:
- Maintain and manage BI data lake, enterprise data warehouse environments, databases, services and platform capabilities in partnership with stakeholders.
- Develop, sustain and monitor data ingestion, integration, transformation processes and lifecycles to ensure data integrity, performance and continuity.
- Assess tool and system limitations, implement appropriate technologies and ensure alignment with governance frameworks and strategic goals.
- Oversee technical procedures, system documentation, vendor services and contracts to ensure governance, security and service continuity.
- Act as deputy for BI on the ICT Change Advisory Board, advising on impacts, securing approvals and preventing project delays.
- Deploy analytics, data science outputs and solutions across BI platforms, including ESRI stacks, into business processes.
- Build partnerships with emergency management and industry experts to expand product reach and inform business plans with data engineering trends.
- Maintain expertise in data warehousing, governance, compliance and security.
About You
Our ideal candidate will be able to demonstrate the following:
- Relevant qualification with well-developed experience in data lifecycle management and development of complex data systems.
- Demonstrated knowledge and well-developed experience across spatial data, cloud platforms (Azure and Databricks preferred), governance practices including CI/CD, source control such as Git, data lifecycles and proficiency with computer programming languages such as SQL, Python or R.
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills with proven ability to optimise delivery outcomes and solve dependencies across stakeholder groups to meet quarterly milestones.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with an ability to manage stakeholder and vendor relationships at senior levels and translate complex technical matters into lay terms.
- Demonstrated authority as a trusted specialist that informs proposals, counsels decision makers and aligns stakeholders to product objectives.
