Mental Health, Justice Health and Alcohol and Drug Services (MHJHADS) provides support to youth and adults via inpatient and outpatient settings, community health centres, justice health facilities and other community settings, including people’s homes. MHJHADS aims to be socially inclusive and operate within a recovery-focussed and/or harm minimisation approach.

The Alcohol and Drug Services (ADS) Team provides a range of treatments for people with alcohol, tobacco, and other drug issues. ADS specialises in providing information and advice, referral, assessment, and treatment to ACT residents who think they or a family member may have an alcohol and/or other drug issue.

All outpatient referrals and initial contact with our services can be made by calling the ADS Intake line. The helpline is staffed by professional intake staff from our ADS team, which provides:

Information on alcohol and other drug and associated issues Advice on assisting and managing people who may have alcohol and other drug issues Support to people affected directly or indirectly by alcohol and drug use.

Our services include:

Consultation and Liaison Opioid Treatment Services Counselling and Treatment Services Youth Drug and Alcohol Program Police Court Drug Diversion Services Withdrawal Service Drug and Alcohol Sentencing List

The successful applicant will have experience in Addiction Medicine and high-level skills relevant to inpatient, consultation liaison and outpatient services. The successful applicant will also be expected to participate in the mandatory administrative, governance and training requirements of medical officers within the Division. Emphasis on recovery focus and person-centred care are essential.

Duties:

Under limited direction of the Clinical Director of ADS you will:

Perform medical alcohol and other drug services within ADS including assessing, diagnosing and treating cases of alcohol and other drug dependence. Undertake training of CMO’s, registrars and medical students as required. Provide an advice and consultancy service on medical issues relating to alcohol and other drug use to private medical practitioners and other health professionals as appropriate Participate in research and quality assurance activities. Provide leadership and promote commitment to high quality customer services principles, practices and attributes. Provide input on policy development to the Director and assist on high level committees as required. Comply with and implement equity and diversity and occupational health and safety principles and practices. Including participate in after hours and on call duties as required. Undertake other duties appropriate to this level of classification which contribute to the operation of the organisation.

Canberra Hospital Expansion Project – CHS is constructing a new critical services building called ‘Building 5’ which is a 44,000sqm nine storey building specifically designed to deliver state-of-the-art acute clinical services at the Canberra Hospital. Building 5 is the largest healthcare infrastructure project undertaken in the Territory’s history and it represents the largest clinical and operational change program to ever be implemented by Canberra Health Services. Building 5 integrates with a number of existing buildings at the Campus including Building 1 and Building 2, to facilitate a seamless public thoroughfare, patient transportation and back-of-house logistics distribution.

North Canberra Hospital - As of 3 July 2023 Calvary Public Hospital Bruce transitioned to CHS and became North Canberra Hospital. The transition will deliver a health system networked under one provider and will provide increased workforce opportunities for staff at both CHS sites. The ACT Government will be building a new northside hospital on the existing hospital campus in Bruce to meet the growing health care needs of our community, with construction to commence mid-decade providing more beds, increased services, and increased career opportunities.
