The Opportunity
The Operations Department is responsible for providing a range of services to Council including the collection of waste and recyclable materials from within the municipality, waste management policy and waste education, the operation of the Waste Recovery Centre, mechanical sweeping of roads and footpaths, inspection, cleaning and maintenance of pits and drains, management of water harvesting and water sensitive urban design facilities, clearance of litter bins from shopping centres, cleaning of Council's toilet blocks and barbeques, the management of Council's plant and Fleet and maintenance of Council infrastructure that includes roads, footpaths, shared trails, signs and street furniture.

The Role

The duties include but are not limited to:

  • Participate in all operational functions of the Waste Recovery Centre and its Transport Operations
  • Billing of customers, payment processing and cash handling
  • Operation of HC vehicles
  • Operation of plant including, Forklift, Front end Loader, and Backhoe
  • Operation of fixed industrial plant
  • Working at Heights including ability to undertake pit rescue
  • Plant and equipment maintenance including daily checks and vehicle cleaning
  • Assisting with the maintenance and operations within the Operations Depot
  • Actively contribute to the team to ensure that the Waste Recovery Centre and transport operations are professionally and efficiently run.
  • Always contributing to create and maintain a safe working environment, and self-initiates response to a potential hazard or incident.
  • Takes initiative and works constructively and collaboratively with team members and customer to resolve challenges that occur during the day.
  • Ensure customers are charged correctly, and ensure monies collected are recorded and balanced daily.
  • Assist with the removal of contaminates (including Asbestos Removal) in accordance with training and procedures
  • Assist with weighbridge operations.
  • Recognise and implement emergency procedures (safety or environmental).
  • Promote and supportive and positive work culture to improve engagement and performance.
  • Ensure safe and proper work practices are adhered to in accordance with current OH&S legislation and relevant industry standards and assist with the development of OH&S documentation.
  • Implement personnel EEO, OH&S and training and development practices.

To be considered for this role:

  • Basic written and oral communication skills.
  • Capability to resolve daily disputes with customers related to Waste Recovery Centre Operations.
  • Capable of completing and maintaining records, forms, and information sheets.
  • Ability to develop a positive and productive rapport with supervisors and team member.
  • Willingness to work in a hands-on outdoor role in the Solid Waste Management Industry.
  • Experience in frontline customer management including conflict resolution.
  • Experience in the receipt of and handling of monies at the point of sale.
  • Licence and competencies to:
    • Drive Heavy Combination (HC) vehicle
    • Operate Forklift
    • Operate backhoe/front-end loader
  • Satisfactory outcome of a National Police Record Check.
  • Ability to commit to rosters with a proven track record of good attendance and punctuality.
