About the Role

Service Stream’s Utilities division are currently seeking a Pipelayer / Operator / Labourer to join our growing company. The primary role and responsibility of the Pipelayer / Operator / Labourer is to work in a team in the water and sewer industry.

Nature of position: Permanent, Full Time

Location: Epping / Clayton South, VIC

Reporting Line: Construction Manager

Key Responsibilities
As a Pipelayer / Operator / Labourer, you will be responsible for tasks, roles & responsibilities set out for you by the Crew Leader & Supervisor, ensuring the successful completion of water and sewer projects in a safe, efficient, and timely manner.

You will be responsible for assessing the ground conditions, digging trenches, assembling pipes, and laying pipes in accordance with city ordinates. You may also be required to remove old piping systems, seal joins, and install auxiliary lines.

The Pipelayer / Operator / Labourer is Responsible and Accountable for the below requirements associated with both their role and the personnel that are aligned as Direct Reports to their position:

  • Pipelaying / Civil Responsibilities
    • Measuring and configuring pipe routes.
    • Gathering material and installation tools.
    • Digging trenches using hand and machine trenching tools.
    • Locating installed piping systems using magnetic or radio indicators.
    • Removing old or broken piping systems.
    • Laying pipes into trenches and applying pipe spacers.
    • Checking pipe alignment and sealing pipes with cement glue.
    • Installing auxiliary lines.
    • Sealing exposed pipe joints and fittings.
    • Filling and sealing pipe trenches.
  • Excavator Operator Responsibilities
    • Operate excavators safely and efficiently to complete assigned tasks, following all safety guidelines and protocols.
    • Perform routine maintenance and inspections on the excavator to ensure optimal performance and prevent breakdowns.
    • Use excavators to dig trenches, foundations, rock breaking and other excavations according to project specifications.
    • Load and unload materials using the excavator, ensuring proper weight distribution and safe handling.
    • Assist in the setup and dismantling of equipment at job sites.
  • General Responsibilities
    • Collaborate with team members and communicate effectively to ensure smooth operations and project completion.
    • Monitor and report any equipment malfunctions or potential safety hazards to the supervisor.
    • Adhere to all company policies and procedures, including those related to safety and environmental regulations.

About You

  • Prior experience as an Operator / Pipelayer / Labourer with the utilities and/or civil construction sector (Essential)
  • Relevant Trade Qualification (Preferable)
  • Certificate III/IV in Civil Construction or equivalent (Preferable)
  • Knowledge of applicable federal, state, and local building codes and safety laws.
  • Good communication and ability to work in a team.
  • Strong knowledge of excavator operations, maintenance, and safety procedure.
  • Ability to read and interpret construction plans and specifications.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to make quick decisions.
  • Ability to deal diligently, patiently, and professionally with stakeholders, clients, sub-contractors, and suppliers.
  • Initiative-taker, able to determine own priorities and manage work accordingly.
  • Analytical with ability to identify and suggest areas for process improvement and drive efficiency.
  • 3+ years’ experience within the Infrastructure Construction industry or similar industry experience.
  • Previous industry experience within utilities, water and/or gas / power.
  • Specialist experience in provision of Civil services discipline
