About the role

Mater Centre for Neurosciences is currently seeking applications for a passionate and dedicated Epilepsy Fellow to join the Neurology and Epilepsy team on a full time, 12-month maxed term contract . This position is based at the Mater Centre for Neurosciences, Mater Hospital South Brisbane campus and we are looking for someone to commence in February 2025 . Our Fellowship is ideal for a post-FRACP neurologist or trainee looking for additional skills and training in EEG interpretation (level 2 or 3, depending upon prior experience).

The Mater Epilepsy Unit

The Mater Epilepsy Unit aims at providing evaluation and optimal management of patients with drug-resistant epilepsy. The consultant team comprises three epileptologists, led by Prof. Aileen McGonigal. Facilities include 4 video-EEG monitoring beds and an outpatient service. There are regular multi-disciplinary team (MDT) clinical case discussions including input from colleagues in psychiatry, neuropsychology, clinical psychology, speech and language pathology, neurosurgery, neuroradiology, paediatric neurology, and a dedicated nurse consultant. Mater Centre for Neurosciences also includes neurologists with specialised interests in neuroimmunology, multiple sclerosis, cognitive neurology, neuromuscular diseases and general neurology, and the largest, most diversely skilled group of neurosurgeons in the state.

Training and educational opportunities

The fellow will receive training in outpatient and inpatient care of adult epilepsy patients, with an emphasis on refractory focal epilepsy and presurgical evaluation. The Fellow will develop expertise in EEG and video-EEG interpretation and will gain experience in stereo-EEG methodology. The Fellow will be encouraged to participate in the weekly general neurology clinical meeting, journal club, neuroradiology meeting and medical grand rounds as well as attendance at Brain School. The Fellow is encouraged to attend relevant national and international meetings e.g., Epilepsy Society of Australia, ANZAN. Participation in clinical research projects in collaboration with other members of the Epilepsy team is encouraged and may lead to co-authorship on publication.

The Fellow’s role in the team

The Epilepsy Fellow will perform daily ward rounds Liaise with the epilepsy team for day-to-day management of patients undergoing video-EEG monitoring. Attend and present at weekly epilepsy case-conference and multi-disciplinary team meetings, both internal and multi-centre. Prepare discharge summaries and contribute to EEG and video-EEG reporting as well as MDT summaries. Participate in 2 supervised epilepsy clinics per week with the option of attending an additional general neurology clinic if wished.

About you

To be considered for this role, the successful applicant must have:

Degree in medicine from an approved institution registrable in Australia. Clinical Skills and experience in Epilepsy Successfully completed the core years of Neurology advanced training Current working rights in Australia
