: The Social Policy and Office of LGBTIQA+ Branch is responsible for progressing initiatives that support a safe and inclusive city for all Canberrans. The team provides advice to the Chief Minister, Cabinet and Head of Service on a wide range of social policy issues, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander policy, health, education, justice, community safety and social inclusion and equality.

Social Policy Branch also includes the Office of LGBTIQA+ Affairs, which delivers the Strategy – the Government’s vision for Canberra to be the most welcoming and inclusive city for people of diverse sex, gender and sexuality.

Team members may work across multiple teams in the Branch in response to peak demands. As an Assistant Director, you will be required to provide robust policy advice across multiple portfolios for senior executives. This includes preparing briefing material and advice for the Chief Minister and Cabinet, working with other Directorates to progress initiatives and commitments, as well as assisting with work tasked to the Social Policy Branch. Subject matter covered may include disability reforms, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander policy including Closing the Gap, LGBTIQA+ policy and reforms, matters relating to gender and women’s policy, health reforms and justice policy, among other topics.

To successfully perform this role, you will have an excellent understanding of social policy issues affecting Canberrans and be willing to work with other directorates to achieve commitments.

Notes: A merit pool may be established from this selection process and may be used to fill future vacancies over the next 12 months. This position operates in an activity-based working (ABW) environment. Under ABW arrangements, officers will not have a designated workstation/desk.
