About AFAC

The Australasian Fire and Emergency Services Council (AFAC) is the national council for fire, land management and emergency service authorities in Australia and New Zealand, representing 34 member organisations, comprising permanent, part-time personnel and volunteers, totalling 295,000 firefighters and emergency workers. 

AFAC seeks to amplify the collective capability and capacity of emergency management organisations. Through connection, collaboration, and innovation, they support members to advance the safety and resilience of communities.

AFAC has several business units that facilitate a broad range of activities on behalf of its members. These include professional services, aircraft contract management, cross border deployment of emergency services personnel and other nationally significant activities such as management of the national conference and National Emergency Services Memorial.

The role - Senior Project Officer

The Senior Project Officer will be supporting AFAC’s National Capability Directorate which is responsible for coordinating a number of nationally significant projects and programs for AFAC and the Fire and Emergency Services sector. 

We are seeking a proficient project management professional with relevant industry experience to drive and deliver on critical initiatives within the directorate portfolio.

As our Senior Project Officer you will:

  • Oversee the Predictive Services Group
  • Ensure PSG meetings are held in line with Collaboration group governance processes
  • Assist with work plan management and implementation.
  • Schedule Fuel Working Group and Spark Operational Reference Group meetings and assist and attend other working groups where required.
  • Manage the quarterly Seasonal Outlook collaboration in conjunction with the AFAC Communications team
  • Assist with research prioritisation and access to funding opportunities
  • Coordinate Fire Prediction Services and Spark Operational projects
  • Information management for Level 1 user support
  • Stakeholder engagement management
  • Budgeting and finance coordination
  • Licencing and users’ registration
  • Records management – tasking and issue logs
  • Project planning documentation
  • Communications planning
  • Phase 4 project delivery co-ordination
  • Prepare papers and agendas (where required) to Fire Predictions Committee, Predictive Services Group reporting, Reference Group management, AFAC Council/Board
  • Work with the Manager Aviation Research and Innovation to develop a framework for assessing approaches to AFAC for innovation technologies

About you

The successful applicant will possess:

  • Extensive knowledge of emergency management sector operations and needs
  • Understanding of the governance and responses of different jurisdictional approaches
  • Computer literacy across a suite of products
  • An adaptive mindset and relentless curiosity to changing needs of the sector
  • Experience in design and coordination of project management
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong organisation skills with the ability to prioritise and meet conflicting deadlines.
