The Gynaecological Oncology Group at The Chris O’Brien Lifehouse has 2 accredited Gynae Onc Fellow positions. The position are for 12 months. The Fellow will be involved and supervise the in-patient and outpatient management and care of patients attending for assessment and treatment.
Selection Criteria
- Planning a career in gynaecological oncology
- NSW Medical Board Registration or eligible for registration
- Completion of specialist training in Obstetrics and Gynaecology
- Hold FRANZCOG or its equivalent
- Advanced knowledge and skills in Gynaecological Oncology, including to undertake some gynaecological cancer surgery without close supervision
- Track record in initiating and developing new research protocols, write research grants, co-ordinate the research process and publish and present research findings at national and international scientific meetings
- Demonstrate superior surgical skills in advanced pelvic surgery commensurate with level
- Research experience with gynaecological cancer patients
- Good verbal and written communication skills
- Good organisational skills
- Ability to work in a team
- Commitment to patient safety and training
- Pass English proficiency test if English not native language
Desirable
- Take a comprehensive medical history and perform a general physical examination in addition to a specific gynaecological history and examination
- Select the appropriate diagnostic techniques to establish gynaecological oncology diagnoses; establish the extent of disease; and evaluate co-existing disease which may have an impact on treatment
- Be able to stage cancer according to current FIGO classification system
- Be able to identify on the basis of direct visual and microscopic evaluation lesions that are premalignant or malignant and distinguish the from benign disorders
- Should understand the genesis of malignant tumours, the biologic behavior of premalignant and malignant tumours and important characteristics and prognostic features
- Should have a sufficient knowledge of normal physiology and pathophysiology
- Should understand the current known effect of environmental and familial factors on carcinogenesis and the risk of genital cancer
- Demonstrate and understanding of the current knowledge of genetic factors in the development of malignancy
- Have sufficient familiarity with evidence-based medicine to permit critical analysis of current literature and of experimental design
- Should have an understanding of major drugs used in human tumour chemotherapy and be able to use them in a rational manner
- Be familiar with the principles and practices of radiation therapy.
- Have sufficient knowledge of general medical and therapeutic principles to permit adequate preoperative evaluation and preparation of the oncology patient and to allow appropriate selection of consultants when indicated.
- Be able to safely manage sick surgical patients in the peri-operative and post-operative periods
Description
- Be responsible for the day to day medical and surgical care of patients of the Sydney Gynaecological Group. This includes in and outpatients and outreach patients. This may include out of hours care.
- Participate in the teaching of registrars, residents and medical students
- Take part in or initiate research and or quality assurance projects within the Unit and Hospital
- Be involved in the continuing development of the hospital as a tertiary referral centre

To attend annual training in the following: Orientation (on appointment to position); Fire Safety (annually)
