The Occupational Hygiene Technician is a split role encompassing both field work and laboratory based work. Field work includes sampling for water, airborne fibres, and workplace atmospheres for respirable and inhalable dusts and other airborne contaminants. Laboratory analysis includes asbestos identification in building materials and soils, and airborne fibre counting. Additionally, the role will be assisting the laboratory function by ensuring all samples are prepared and analysed in a timely manner while assisting with various other laboratory duties, to achieve operational, customer and quality requirements. Experience in field work and/or microscopy will be highly regarded, however extensive training will be provided to the right candidate.

Reporting to the Supervisor, responsibilities for this role will include but are not limited to:

Preparing samples for analysis in accordance with sample/analysis requirements and preparation methods. Performing routine analysis, validations and project work in an efficient and effective manner. Analysis conducted will include respirable fibre counting, asbestos identification, inhalable and respirable dust (and associated airborne workplace contaminants), and diesel particulate analysis.  Field work, including volume air measurement for asbestos fibre monitoring, and respirable and inhalable dusts. Once fully trained, overnight, remote, and mine site work will be required (applicable allowances will apply). Ensuring external and internal clients’ requirements are met / exceeded. Ensuring efficient utilisation of laboratory materials. Operating, calibrating and maintaining equipment/instruments as required.

Qualifications

Certificate / Diploma in Laboratory Techniques; or other tertiary education with field-based learning outcomes; or significant field or laboratory experience.

About You

To be successful for this position, you will need to demonstrate the following qualities and characteristics:

Experience in a commercial laboratory will be an advantage. Experience with field work and associated record keeping will be an advantage. A proven ability to learn quickly and work under minimal supervision. Excellent communication and record keeping skills. Flexibility with overtime, weekend and remote/overnight work. Strong attention to detail. Excellent organizational skills and ability to multi-task. Excellent technical skills. Good time management skills.

Extensive on the job training will be provided in both the laboratory and field aspects, along with the use of our systems and programs.
