Position Overview:

The Software Engineering Manager is responsible for leading, mentoring, and managing a team of software engineers to deliver high-quality software solutions. This role involves technical oversight, project management, and people management to ensure the successful execution of software development projects. The ideal candidate will have a strong technical background, excellent communication skills, and experience in leading a team of software engineers.

Key Responsibilities:

Team Leadership and Development

  • Recruit, hire, and onboard new software engineers to build a high-performing team.
  • Provide coaching, mentoring, and career development opportunities for team members.
  • Conduct regular performance reviews and provide feedback to foster growth and development, including performance management processes as applicable.

Project Management and Execution

  • Oversee the planning, execution, and delivery of software development projects.
  • Coordinate with cross-functional teams, including product management and quality assurance, to ensure project success.
  • Ensure projects are delivered on time, within scope and with high quality.
  • Escalate early, with proposed remedies where project is under threat of slippage to deliverables, to ensure early interventions.

 Technical Oversight

  • Provide clarity of deliverables, technical guidance and expertise to the Australian software engineering team.
  • Be an escalation point for the Australian software team to resolve issues early.
  • Review code and design solutions to ensure compliance with safety standards such as ISO26262 using the company's product development process.
  • Foster a culture of innovation and continuous improvement in software engineering practices.

 Stakeholder Communication

  • Collaborate with product and program management and other stakeholders, as relevant to understand project requirements and align engineering efforts with business goals.
  • Communicate project status, risks, technical issues, results and challenges (with proposed solutions) to senior leadership and other stakeholders.

 Process Improvement

  • Identify and implement process improvements to increase efficiency and effectiveness in software development.
  • Promote Agile methodologies and foster a culture of collaboration and accountability.

Requirements

The ideal candidate will have:

Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field (Master's degree preferred).

Experience:

  • Minimum of 8-10 years of experience in software development.
  • At least 3-5 years in a managerial or leadership role within software engineering.
  • Proven experience leading teams of 15+ software engineers.

Technical Expertise:

  • Experience in embedded software development
  • Proficiency in programming languages (e.g., C++) and model based development.
  • Strong understanding of software development methodologies (Agile, Scrum, Kanban).
  • Experience with DevOps practices and CI/CD pipelines.

Leadership and Management:

  • Strong leadership abilities with a focus on team building and motivation.
  • Excellent people management skills, including mentoring and performance management.
  • Ability to foster a collaborative and inclusive team environment.
  • Conflict resolution and mediation skills.

Project Management:

  • Proficient in project planning, scheduling, and execution.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Strong risk management and problem-solving skills

Communication:

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to communicate technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
  • Strong presentation and documentation skills.
