Terrestrial ecologist

The Role:

In this role, you will join our team as a Terrestrial Ecologist, applying your expertise in terrestrial ecology, data analysis, interpretation and science communication. You will study plant and animal ecology, population dynamics, and collaborate with research institutions, conservation bodies and government agencies. Your responsibilities include conducting and communicating research to a wide range of stakeholders and contributing to evidence -based management and conservation.

About you:

• A Ph.D. degree or equivalent experience in Ecology, Environmental Science, Biology, or a related field
• Strong understanding of plant and animal ecology, conservation biology principles, especially in Victoria and coastal zones.
• Excellent quantitative and analytical skills, including statistical analysis and proficiency in R or Python.
• Demonstrated ability to work effectively in field conditions, including remote environments.
• Experience with field data collection methods (e.g., vegetation surveys, wildlife monitoring).
• Proficiency in GIS software (e.g., ArcGIS, QGIS) and spatial analysis. Experience with remote sensing and landscape modeling preferred.
• Ability to communicate findings to general audiences and work with local communities.
• Experience of publishing research in scientific journals and communicating results to colleagues and wider community
• Excellent written and oral communication skills for delivering presentations and interacting with diverse audiences.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

• Manipulate, analyse, and interpret large ecological datasets.
• Apply statistical methods to identify ecological trends in field data.
• Assess habitat suitability and quality through ecological assessments and develop habitat models and maps for conservation strategies.
• Investigate population dynamics of plant and animal species, analyzing factors influencing growth, distribution, and interactions.
• Conduct field surveys to study terrestrial ecosystems, including vegetation dynamics, wildlife populations, and habitat characteristics.
• Utilize advanced GIS tools and spatial analysis techniques to integrate field data and assess landscape patterns.
• Collaborate with state, federal agencies, and nonprofits to design field studies and implement conservation projects.
• Provide technical expertise on ecological issues related to terrestrial ecosystems.
• Assist with re-vegetation planning, weeding, and pest management as needed.
• Communicate research results effectively to scientists, policymakers, and the public.
• Supervise research students and interns.
