The National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA) is Australia’s premier training ground for future leaders and practitioners in the dramatic arts. Located at Kensington in Sydney, it is a Centre of excellence in education and training. NIDA is unique in the world for its practice-based and industry-relevant training in the range that it offers which includes Acting, Design, Costume, Properties and Objects, Technical Theatre and Stage Management, Scenic Construction, Writing for Performance, Directing and Cultural Leadership.
NIDA is currently seeking expressions of interest from arts educators for the 2025 BFA and MFA common subjects. These subjects are compulsory for all BFA and MFA students. In 2025 we will deliver a refreshed curriculum focusing on developing essential skills for emerging arts professionals entering the sector.
Tutors in the BFA program will be working with the first- and second-year students from six disciplines: Props and Effects, Costume, Set Construction Technologies, Design for Performance, Technical Theatre and Stage Management and Acting. Tutors will work with small group tutorials, mark assessments, and possibly facilitate workshops and interactive lectures. Topics covered in one of the BFA subjects include First Nations ways of learning, connection to Country, cultural awareness, sustainable practice in the performing arts, health and wellbeing, environmental sustainability, entrepreneurialism, and emerging technologies. In the other BFA subjects, students will engage in discussion about contemporary performance in a variety of forms and contexts and will consider the historical and intercultural influences on performance.
Tutors in the MFA program will be working on a subject called Practice-based Research with the students in Directing, Dramatic Writing and Cultural Leadership. Practice-based Research describes a variety of approaches to the relationship between things we make and do in the world, and how we create and share knowledge connected with them. This subject prepares students to enrich their specific practice and share their findings with a community of peers.
Please include the following with your expression of interest:
- Qualifications for BFA teaching - Masters Degree or Industry experience equivalence
- Qualifications for MFA teaching – PhD, PhD candidature or a Masters Degree plus demonstrated teaching and/or research experience
- A short cover letter indicating your teaching experience, your areas of interest, expertise, and availability in 2025
