We are seeking an experienced Head of Engineering to be a trusted partner for our VP of Technology in leading and evolving our engineering teams, ensuring best-in-class software development and delivering rapid product innovation.
Why This Role Matters
As Head of Engineering, you will be a hands-on leader responsible for driving technical strategy, scaling engineering teams, and delivering high-impact solutions across frontend, backend, and mobile platforms. With a strong focus on AWS serverless architecture and TypeScript, you will lead the transition to our modern TypeScript, Node, React, React Native based architecture while ensuring smooth migration from legacy systems (.NET).
This is a critical role in Spacetalk's scale-up journey, offering the opportunity to shape our technology landscape and build a team that delivers world-class AI-driven safety solutions.
Key Responsibilities
Leadership & Strategy

  • Lead, mentor, and scale a high-performing engineering team across multiple disciplines (frontend, backend, DevOps, mobile).
  • Drive technical strategy in collaboration with the VP Technology, Head of Product, Hardware and Data Science teams to align engineering priorities with business objectives.
  • Establish and foster an engineering culture of innovation, collaboration, and technical excellence.
  • Own and optimise engineering processes, development best practices, and team workflows to ensure efficiency and quality.
  • Ensure the engineering team is up-to-date on the latest technologies, particularly in serverless computing, AI integration, and mobile ecosystems.
Technical Execution & Hands-On Development
  • Architect, develop, and deliver scalable, secure, and high-performance applications using our modern tech stack:
  • Frontend & Mobile: TypeScript, React, React Native
  • Backend & Infrastructure: TypeScript + NodeJS, some Python
  • Infrastructure: Terraform, AWS (API Gateway, Lambda, DynamoDB, OpenSearch, Redis/ValKey), SST, GitLab CI/CD
  • Oversee the migration from .NET-based legacy systems to our modern stack, ensuring minimal disruption.
  • Drive best practices in software development, including code quality, testing, DevOps, and security.
  • Champion cloud-native and serverless architectures to support Spacetalk's international growth and scalability.
Collaboration & Product Alignment
  • Work closely with Product, Design, and Data Science teams to deliver customer-focused features and AI-driven insights.
  • Partner with Regulatory and Security teams to ensure adherence to data security and privacy standards (SOC2, HIPAA, GDPR).
  • Collaborate with external partners and stakeholders to integrate Spacetalk's API and web services into health and safety ecosystems.
Requirements
About You: you're a technical leader with a passion for scaling engineering teams and building AI-driven safety solutions . You thrive in fast-paced, scale-up environments and are comfortable with both hands-on coding and high-level strategy.
Essential
  • 5+ years in engineering leadership roles (Head of Engineering, Engineering Manager, or similar).
  • Strong AWS experience, particularly Lambda, DynamoDB, OpenSearch, and Terraform.
  • Proficiency in TypeScript and JavaScript, with experience in React and React Native.
  • Experience leading teams through technology transitions and modernising software stacks.
  • Hands-on experience with CI/CD (GitLab), and cloud-native architectures.
  • Strong problem-solving skills with a scalability and security mindset.
Highly Desirable
  • Experience in mobile development (iOS/Android using React Native).
  • Experience in watch app development (iOS/Android).
  • Experience integrating with Apple and Android Health services
  • Familiarity with AI/ML-driven applications and IoT integrations.
  • Knowledge of .NET (to support transition from legacy systems).
  • Knowledge of iOS/Android native development (to support transition from legacy products).
  • Experience working in regulated industries (healthcare, safety, security, or finance).
