The Senior Project Engineer acts as a Subject Matter Expert for complex orders and the technical escalation point for Project Engineers in the SA Field Operations team. The SPE also plays a vital role by participating in process improvements through project initiatives within Networks.

This role of Senior Project Engineer involves the installation, relocation and maintenance of telecommunications for Optus Core and Customer Access fibre networks. It also includes assisting in the development and implementation of standards and procedures. As a fully competent project engineering position, adapting to evolving workloads and technological changes in network infrastructure is key to success. The role operates within the Field Operations team responsible for fibre delivery and assurance work in South Australia, working closely with teammates to ensure timely service delivery, maintenance, and provisioning.

The position requires strong time management skills to prioritise daily tasks and meet outcomes while balancing multiple responsibilities independently. The Senior Project Engineer engages with contracting parties to resolve issues, ensuring project timelines are met. The role also involves collaborating with various business partners, including Field Delivery Managers, Outside Plant Managers, Senior Engineers, Design Groups, Field Technicians, and contracted staff, as well as collaborating closely with customers, landlords, local councils, and authorities to ensure regulatory compliance and service continuity.

The day to day
  • Ensure adherence to local procedures, including health, safety, security, and WH&S requirements.
  • Coordinate and manage contractors for network facility installations, ensuring compliance with Optus and industry standards.
  • Coordinate fibre project design, build, and testing for both core and customer networks, including quality acceptance activities.
  • Manage orders, relocations, and rearrangements within the existing fibre network to ensure smooth service delivery.
  • Engage with utilities and local authorities, resolve LAAN objections, and negotiate approvals for network projects.
  • Prepare and evaluate tenders, raise project purchase orders, and process invoices.
  • Support field engineers in provisioning and commissioning services while proactively supervising tasks and calling out issues as needed.
  • Offer technical support on complex issues to team Manager and Project Engineers. Assist team Manager in identifying training gaps to maintain high product knowledge and provide feedback for the PDR process to support staff development and performance.

  • Relevant professional qualifications in telecommunications or equivalent experience, with strong understanding of fibre network topologies and maintenance.
  • Ability to read and interpret CAD drawings, use test equipment, and demonstrate knowledge of fibre delivery and network build processes.
  • Strong project management skills, ability to engage contractors and manage third-party relationships effectively.
  • Well-developed digital literacy, competency in MS Office, and experience with Optus systems (HELIX, NSM) is desirable.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to negotiate and influence at all levels.
  • Ability to prioritise tasks, manage numerous projects, adapt to change, and perform effectively under pressure.
