ABOUT NAAFLS

NAAFLS is a non-government Aboriginal Corporation providing legal advice, representation and community legal education to Aboriginal people living in Communities and small towns across the Top End of the NT. We provide advice and representation to victims of Domestic Violence, including Family Law clients and to victims who are the subject of Child Protection Applications or Orders. Other work includes Victims of Crime Compensation Claims and assistance and support with housing applications.

NAAFLS has offices in Darwin, Katherine and Nhulunbuy and assists clients in over 44 remote communities. Regular travel to these communities is predominantly in line with the Darwin and Katherine Court Circuit calendars and requires our team to stay overnight on community for up to two trips of 2-4 days per month.

Teams consist of a Solicitor and Case Worker who provide a wrap around holistic service to our vulnerable clients to ensure they are fully supported through their journey.

KEY RESPONSIBILITES

  • Assist in management of the Legal Practise of NAAFLS.
  • Ensure NAAFLS provides a high level culturally appropriate legal assistance and advice to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander People in matters of law primarily Family Law, Family Violence and Child Protection.
  • Maintain accurate legal client files and timely data entry using Actionstep.
  • Engage as Acting PLO as required.
  • Promote law reform activities.
  • Actively participate in leading the strategic direction of the organisation as a member of the Executive Leadership Team.
  • Build a positive culture within the service which is aligned with NAAFLS' values and Strategic Plan.
  • Participate in all staff and team meetings as required.
  • Undertake remote community travel from time to time, including overnight.
  • Undertake training/professional development in consultation with the PLO.
  • Promote and maintain safe work practices in accordance with NAAFLS WH&S Policies and Procedures.
  • Undertake other duties as reasonably directed.

DUTIES

  • Assist in management of the Legal Practise of NAAFLS including supervision, training and mentoring of solicitors, volunteers and paralegals in accordance with the Risk Management Guide and legislative framework.
  • Maintain accurate legal client files and timely data entry using Actionstep.
  • Participate in legal staff recruitment, orientation and induction.
  • Identify professional development opportunities for the legal team to enable upskilling and ensure CPD certificate compliance for solicitors.
  • Conduct probation reviews, annual and biannual performance reviews, and corresponding individualised staff training and development plans with the Legal Team.
  • Provide training, coaching and mentoring to the Legal Team.
  • Assist the PLO to ensure service delivery and operational policy and procedures are being consistently and accurately updated, implemented and adhered to.
  • Ensure Client data is being gathered and stored on Actionstep to ensure collection of accurate information relating to KPI indicators.
  • Adhere to NAAFLS policies and procedures.
  • Build a positive culture within the service which is aligned with NAAFLS' values and Strategic Plan.
  • Participate in all staff and team meetings as required.
  • Undertake remote community travel from time to time, including overnight.
  • Undertake training/professional development in consultation with the PLO.

SELECTION CRITERIA

  • Eligibility for an Unrestricted Practising Certificate as a Barrister or Solicitor of the Supreme Court of the Northern Territory.
  • No less than 3 years post admission experience, including: a demonstrated capacity to prepare and conduct defended matters as Counsel in the Federal Circuit Court of Australia for Family Law clients, the Local Court in the Child Protection jurisdiction for Aboriginal family members and the Summary Jurisdiction in regard to Domestic Violence for clients who have been the victims of Domestic Violence.
  • Proven ability to supervise, mentor and manage a reliable, productive and constructive team within an integrated organisational model, delivering legal and non-legal services.
  • Demonstrate capacity to provide accessible and culturally sensitive legal advice and assistance on complex legal issues relating to domestic and family violence, family law, crimes compensation, child protection and other areas of law offered by NAAFLS.
  • Demonstrate excellent written, oral and interpersonal communication skills including negotiation and conflict resolution skills and maintain confidentiality provisions.
  • Display a high level attention to detail and demonstrated ability to work with an electronic records management system and enter accurate and timely data and use a range of computer programs.
  • A willingness to travel by road and or light aircraft to remote Aboriginal Communities, to undertake cultural education and support the work of the organisation.
