Job Description
Introduction:
The Disability Support Worker provides compassionate and comprehensive assistance to individuals with disabilities, ensuring their physical, emotional, and social needs are met. This position involves providing personalized care, promoting independence, and fostering a supportive environment for clients to thrive in their daily lives.
Role Description:
The purpose of a Disability Support Worker is multifaceted, centered around providing essential assistance and support to individuals with disabilities. Here are some key purposes of this role:
1. Enhancing Quality of Life: The primary purpose is to enhance the quality of life for individuals with disabilities by assisting them in their daily activities and promoting their independence and dignity.
2. Personalized Care: Disability Support Workers provide personalized care tailored to the unique needs and preferences of each individual client. This includes assistance with personal hygiene, grooming, dressing, mobility, and other activities of daily living.
3. Promoting Independence: Support workers empower individuals with disabilities to be as independent as possible by providing assistance and encouragement while respecting their autonomy and choices.
4. Ensuring Safety and Well-being: Another critical purpose is to ensure the safety and well-being of clients by creating a safe environment, following infection control procedures, administering medications safely, and responding to emergencies promptly and effectively.
5. Emotional and Social Support: Disability Support Workers offer emotional support and companionship to clients, fostering positive relationships and providing a listening ear for their concerns. They also facilitate social interactions and engagement in recreational activities to combat isolation and promote mental well-being.
6. Collaboration and Advocacy: Support workers collaborate with other healthcare professionals, families, and community resources to advocate for the needs and rights of individuals with disabilities. They act as advocates for their clients, ensuring they receive the necessary support and services to live fulfilling lives.
7. Documentation and Communication: Disability Support Workers maintain accurate records of client care activities, communicate effectively with supervisors and colleagues, and report any changes in clients' conditions to ensure continuity of care and appropriate interventions.

Key Responsibilities:
1. Personal Care Assistance:
• Assist clients with personal hygiene tasks, including bathing, grooming, and toileting.
• Aid clients with dressing and undressing, ensuring their comfort and dignity.
• Assist with mobility, transfers, and positioning as needed.
2. Medication Management:
• Administer medications according to prescribed schedules and dosage instructions.
• Monitor and document clients' medication intake and any observed side effects.
• Communicate with healthcare professionals regarding medication changes or concerns.
3. Daily Living Support:
• Assist clients with meal preparation, feeding, and dietary needs.
• Provide support with household tasks such as light cleaning, laundry, and organizing.
• Accompany clients to appointments, outings, and social activities as requested.
4. Emotional and Social Support:
• Build rapport and trust with clients, fostering positive relationships based on respect and empathy.
• Provide emotional support and companionship, actively listening to clients' concerns and providing reassurance.
• Encourage clients to engage in recreational activities and hobbies to promote social interaction and mental stimulation.
5. Documentation and Reporting:
• Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of client care activities, including daily progress notes and incident reports.
• Communicate effectively with supervisors, colleagues, and healthcare professionals regarding clients' needs and any changes in their condition.
• Adhere to confidentiality policies and regulations when handling sensitive client information.
6. Safety and Wellbeing:
• Ensure a safe and hazard-free environment for clients, identifying and addressing potential risks.
• Follow infection control protocols and guidelines to prevent the spread of illness or infection.
• Respond promptly to emergencies or crisis situations, following established procedures and protocols.
Desired Skills and Experience
• Minimum Cert 3 in Individual support/Disability or equivalent
• Previous experience working with individuals with disabilities or in a similar caregiving role highly desirable.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to interact effectively with clients, families, and healthcare professionals.
• Compassionate and patient demeanor, with a genuine desire to make a positive difference in clients' lives.
• Ability to work independently as well as part of a team, demonstrating reliability and flexibility in a dynamic caregiving environment.
• Have empathy and compassion.
• Basic knowledge of personal care techniques, infection control practices, and safety procedures.
• A willingness to undergo background checks and meet any other requirements mandated by regulatory bodies or employers.
• NDIS Workers Screening Check.
• National Police Check.
• Current Working with Children Check.
• First Aid Certificate & CPR.
• A full and current Driver's License.
• At least two shots of the Covid-19 vaccine.
