Canterbury Hospital is offering a position as Unaccredited Trainee in Intensive Care and Anaesthesia for a period of twelve (12) months, including four (4) months of supervised Anaesthetics training.

**Where you'll be working**
Canterbury Hospital is part of the Sydney Local Health District (SLHD), which services approximately 1.42 million people (20% of the NSW population). Local government areas covered by the hospital include Canterbury, Ashfield, Burwood and Strathfield and parts of Marrickville. SLHD is the most ethnically diverse area health service in Australia, with 39% of the population speaking a language other than English. Canterbury Hospital caters for a local population of 220,000 people, of which 66% come from non-English speaking backgrounds. The main language groups of the local communities are Greek, Italian, Arabic, Vietnamese and Chinese. The hospital is a 215-bed metropolitan acute general hospital, providing services in general medicine and surgery, obstetrics and gynaecology, paediatrics, aged care and rehabilitation.

**What you'll be doing**
- Canterbury Hospital is offering a position as Unaccredited Trainee in Intensive Care and Anaesthesia for a period of twelve (12) months, including four (4) months of supervised Anaesthetics training. The remaining eight (8) months will provide experience and training in Intensive Care Medicine and Cardiology, supervised primarily by Critical Care specialists, with Cardiologist specialist supervision for Cardiology patients, in the combined Level 4 Intensive Unit (ICU)/Coronary Care Unit (CCU). The trainee will primarily be responsible for providing, under supervision, day-to-day management of patients who are admitted to the Level 4 ICU/CCU supported by a Senior Resident Medical Officer (SRMO).
- Canterbury Hospital ICU/CCU is a twelve (12)-bed centrally monitored designated Level 4 ICU. The Unit provides for haemodynamic support and intensive monitoring as well as non-invasive ventilation but does not provide prolonged invasive ventilation or dialysis/renal replacement therapy. Approximately 1500 patients are admitted annually to the Unit. Patients who deteriorate and require escalation of care are transferred in a well-established network arrangement, primarily to the supporting Level 6 ICU at Concord Hospital. It is an open ICU where inpatient consultants remain primarily responsible for management decisions for patients admitted under their care. The Unit has dedicated ICU nurses in a 1: 3 ratio with a dedicated Nurse Unit Manager, Clinical Nurse Educator and Clinical Nurse Consultant, also coordinating and managing the Rapid Response (Medical Emergency Team (MET)) system for the Facility. The case mix in the Unit is approximately 60% Coronary Care: including heart failure, NSTEMIs and arrhythmias/syncope for investigation/management, and approximately 40% Intensive Care: common conditions include post-operative surgical care and monitoring, sepsis requiring haemodynamic support, diabetic ketoacidosis, and respiratory failure requiring non-invasive ventilatory support.
- This position requires flexibility for a rotating roster which will include twelve (12) hour day or night shifts to provide cover seven (7) days per week in ICU, with a maximum of seven (7) shifts per fortnight in ICU, and on-call for sick relief pro rata. The ICU trainee will also act as Medical Officer in Charge (MOIC) for the hospital between 2300 and 0800, attending ward emergency calls overnight and supporting a junior medical officer. - MBBS or equivalent, currently registered or eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia.
- Demonstrated ability to work with appropriate independence, commensurate with a level of experience of a PGY4(+) doctor with a minimum of three (3) years post-graduate experience and at least three (3) months experience in Intensive care, Anaesthesia and/or Cardiology
