**The Coroner's Court of Victoria is responsible for**:
- Independently investigating deaths and fires.
- Reducing preventable deaths.
- Promoting public health and safety and the administration of justice.
About the role
The Coroners Prevention Unit (CPU) provides support to Coroners to fulfill their prevention mandate to improve public health and safety.
The CPU manages the Victorian Systemic Review of Family Violence Deaths (VSRFVD), undertaking in-depth reviews of these complex deaths to contribute to strengthening the response to family violence across the state.
The primary role of the Project Officer Family Violence is to support the VSRFVD by:
- Identifying family violence homicides among deaths reported to the Court.
- Tracking investigations through the criminal and (where relevant) coronial process and assessing whether the death meets the criteria of the VSRFVD.
- Reviewing case file material to undertake detailed coding, which involves capturing a combination of free text and binary/categorical data about homicides investigated by Coroners, collating data, and preparing reports.
