Overview
UNSW Canberra invites applications for a postdoctoral Research Associate / Senior Research Associate in Theoretical Quantum Information with high-spin nuclei. The research group led by Professor Andrea Morello develops quantum computing hardware based on the spin of implanted donors, integrated within silicon nanoelectronic devices. The role is theory-focused and aims to demonstrate quantum information processing with high-spin nuclei in silicon, exploiting the high dimensionality of the Hilbert space to encode robust logical qubits. The project emphasizes fault-tolerant quantum operations, quantum error correction, and scalability beyond one atom. As a theory-focused position, you will develop new theory for quantum information processing in high-dimensional systems and inform future directions for the experimental effort.
Responsibilities
Develop theoretical models and methods for quantum information processing in high-dimensional systems (high-spin nuclei in silicon).
Contribute to the demonstration of fault-tolerant quantum operations and quantum error correction concepts.
Inform and collaborate with the experimental group to guide future directions.
Publish results and present at conferences; contribute to peer-reviewed publications.
Engage in cross-disciplinary collaboration within the group.
Qualifications
Research Associate (Level A)
PhD (or soon to be awarded) in quantum physics, quantum engineering, or related area.
Demonstrated ability to develop original theory in quantum information processing and quantum error correction.
Demonstrated ability to apply quantum information theory to practical experimental platforms.
Ability to conduct independent research with limited supervision.
Strong publication and conference presentation record relative to opportunity.
Strong collaboration and communication skills; ability to work in a diverse team.
Understanding of UNSW aims, policies, and health and safety requirements.
Senior Research Associate (Level B)
PhD in Physics, Quantum Engineering, or related area; postdoctoral experience is preferred.
Demonstrated ability to develop original theory in quantum information processing and quantum error correction.
Demonstrated ability to apply quantum information theory to practical experimental platforms.
Experience in developing research directions in quantum information theory and supervising students.
Proven ability to conduct independent research with limited supervision and to lead writing of peer-reviewed publications.
Strong interpersonal and collaborative skills; ability to supervise honours and postgraduate research students.
Understanding of UNSW aims, policies, and health and safety requirements.

Salary:
Research Associate – Level A – AUD $117,877 to $121,838 per annum + 17% superannuation;
Senior Research Associate – Level B – AUD $127,947 to $150,830 per annum + 17% superannuation
