**Job no**: 497992
**Work type**: Full time
**Location**: Hobart, Launceston, Burnie
**Categories**: Management, Teaching Support, Strategy
**Your New Role**
Leading the Academic Division and reporting to the Vice-Chancellor, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) is an integral and valued member of the University's Executive Team.
You will play a key role in realising the University of Tasmania's vision to be a place-based University with a mission to enhance the intellectual, economic, social and cultural future of Tasmania, and from Tasmania, contribute to the world in areas of distinctive advantage.
Our focus on places underpins our approach to the delivery of our academic mission. Here we develop contemporary pedagogical practices and distinctive student experiences inside and outside of the classroom for all of our different student cohorts. We are regionally networked in the way we deliver our offerings and respond to the particular needs and character of our regions. Access and excellence underpin all that we do across the full breadth of our learning and teaching agenda. Our unwavering commitment to the learning and experiences of our students has been fundamental to who we are since the University's inception.
Our focus on people makes this a critical role. As an academic and education leader you will be strongly focused on academic quality ensuring that there is an integrated approach to academic careers and the professional growth of academic staff. You will create and foster a positive, inclusive and caring environment where people are valued and the endeavour is shared. You will be focused on delivering the best outcomes for the University community very much including our students and be visible, accessible and highly approachable as you go about the task.
You will oversee our academic delegations and ensure the organisational structure, processes and projects support the broader academic endeavour of the University. You will oversee the role of ensuring quality and integrity in the delivery of academic programs.
If this is a mission that you too wish to embrace, we offer you the opportunity to make a real difference to Tasmania and the world as our new Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic).
**About the University**
Our story began a little over 130 years ago, in a sandstone building overlooking Hobart. Since those early days with three lecturers teaching eleven students, our purpose has remained the same. Through academic excellence, we make our home, and the world, a better place. While much has changed during the University's history, our students have always been at the very heart of both who we are and what we are about.
We live and work on an island where tens thousands of years of culture, knowledge and wisdom come before us. We profoundly acknowledge the traditional owners and their deep history with these lands and waters and their enduring culture whose system of knowledge is structured by place.
There is much humility to us achieving our vision. We are very aware of and attuned to the history with tragedy on this island. We know that the unique living knowledges of the traditional owners of this land can help shape the future.
The University recognises that achieving our vision also depends on the people we employ and on creating a people-centred University that is values-based, relational, diverse, and development-focused. Our focus on places underpins our approach to the delivery of our academic mission. Along with our own encounters with the island and its character, the experiences we offer students are shaped too by the island and what we find and engage with here. This brings them a distinctiveness found only here.
Responding to our unique setting and the challenges found here, we go beyond creating places of learning and work towards the shared common good in all that we do. We strive to stimulate economic growth, lift literacy, improve health outcomes for Tasmania and nurture our environment as it nurtures us. We welcome enquiring minds, from near and far, to join us in our quiet pursuit of the extraordinary.
**What You'll Need to Succeed**
You will bring to the role demonstrated high level (Executive Dean, Pro-Vice-Chancellor or equivalent role) academic leadership skills in learning and teaching and capacity to foster academic excellence. You will have demonstrated comprehensive experience in leading the development of contemporary pedagogical practices and distinctive student experiences.
A key strength will be your strategic insight into how to expand access to higher education and to supporting the equal success of all students irrespective of the context from which they come.
You will have comprehensive experience in designing programs to support the development and growth of academic staff and the creation of a collegial community.
