Data Scientist – Demographic

We're looking for someone who lives and breathes demographic trends, population data, and the messy, fascinating work of predicting how communities change over time.
Expertise in demographics or social science is more important to us than a standard "data science" resume — though if you've built models, shipped tools, or created new ways to forecast population change, we'll be extra excited.SkillsStrong background in demography, population studies, social sciences, or related fieldsProven experience with demographic or population forecasting methods (traditional and/or novel approaches)Solid analysis skills - statistical modelling, time-series analysis, spatial data, or microsimulationComfortable working with large, messy, and multi-source datasets (e.g., census, surveys, administrative data)Ability to self-service data needs - comfortable writing queries in SQL and doing analysis in Python (we don't expect mastery; we can teach you more)Able to communicate complex findings clearly to both technical and non-technical audiencesExperience with software development or data-driven products is a big plus.
We would love to hear about what you have built in the past.Creative and curious mindset - willing to experiment with new approaches and challenge assumptionsYour days might include:Building, testing, and refining our prototype demographic forecasting modelsPairing with engineers to write up new population forecasting models features into production systemsHunting down and debugging an edge case that mysteriously sends every 55-year-old to Darwin one year... and brings them back the next.Exploring new datasets and methods to improve population predictionsWriting SQL queries and Python scripts to pull, clean, and analyse dataWorking with product teams on how to clearly and simply explain our methodology to clientsWorking with our sales team to understand the requirements for a new scenario model our clients are asking forFiguring out how to model housing as an independent variable instead of dependent — or how to value property development as a probability functionTranslating research insights into practical, decision-ready outputs for products or projectsWriting clear, data-backed explanations of model outputs for stakeholdersPrototyping new techniques for small-area or high-resolution forecastsWorking on ideas that push the boundaries of how demographic forecasting is done
