**The Opportunities**

We are seeking a **Manager of Disease Surveillance** and a **Manager of Epidemiology and Risk** to join our Biosecurity Division at the Department of Primary Industries and Regions.

PIRSA's Animal Biosecurity program protects and facilitates market access and livestock productivity, public health and consumer confidence through the health, welfare, quality, safety and image of South Australian livestock and livestock products, and other animals. Global trade access for livestock and livestock products increasingly requires demonstrated minimum standards of animal health and welfare.

The Animal Biosecurity group provides a system for animal disease early warning and early detection of exotic diseases; develops programmes for data collection to allow monitoring of animal health status and proof of disease freedom; and maintains capacity for emergency animal disease management.

**Role Details**

**_Manager Disease Surveillance_**

The Manager of Disease Surveillance role contributes to delivering the agency's priorities including increasing productivity of our livestock industries and agribusinesses, securing production through biosecurity and efficient and sustainable use of resources, and maintaining market access by working with livestock industries to respond to evolving requirements of domestic and global markets and consumers. The role contributes to the management of the risks to South Australia posed by animal pests and diseases. The disease surveillance program manages national and state surveillance strategies to protect and facilitate market access and the early reporting of emergency animal diseases

The Manager of Disease Surveillance provides leadership to the disease surveillance programs and policies for South Australia. The role collaborates with national and local organisations such as Australian Centre for Disease Preparedness, Animal Health Australia, Department of Agriculture Fisheries and Forestry and local and national industry bodies to develop and continually monitor animal surveillance system in SA and nationally.

The role has responsibility for development and implementation of effective communication plans, reporting mechanisms, and early detection and alert phase activities for emergency animal diseases to support the disease surveillance programs. The role will provide strategic and scientific leadership in surveillance systems and animal health policy, program development and implementation, including providing high-level technical advice to the Animal Biosecurity Branch.

**_Manager Epidemiology and Risk_**

The Manager Epidemiology and Risk role contributes to delivering the agency's priorities including increasing productivity of our livestock industries and agribusinesses, securing production through biosecurity and efficient and sustainable use of resources, and maintaining market access by working with livestock industries to respond to evolving requirements of domestic and global markets and consumers.

The role contributes to the management of the risks to South Australia posed by animal pests and diseases. The Epidemiology and Risk program plays a critical role in the management of epidemiological reporting, animal health risk management, and emergency animal disease preparedness programs.

The Manager Epidemiology and Risk will develop epidemiological and risk-based decision-making capacity to support emergency animal disease preparedness and response, and other animal health program activities. The role will provide strategic and scientific leadership in epidemiology and animal health policy, program development and implementation, including providing high-level technical advice to the Animal Biosecurity group.
