Position Summary
Reporting to the BEAMS Manager, the Aspire Coach joins a multi-faceted team who are making a difference in people's lives every day. All Aspire Coaches will provide a welcoming, calm environment in the drop-in centre to participants with complex barriers such as mental health, substance use, homelessness or precarious housing. The objective of the BEAMS project is to assist and support all eligible BEAMS Participants along the continuum to employment, beginning with outreach, access to flexible, trauma-informed and culturally safe individualized services and/or supports, facilitating programming and training and providing participants with exit strategies.
Key Responsibilities
Participant Support
Create, implement, and update individualized Aspire Plans with participants
Provide employment coaching, referrals, and access to training, financial supports, and other services
Guide participants through volunteer and work experiences
Monitor mental health and substance use to determine when additional support is needed
Maintain regular communication and documentation for each participant
Program Facilitation
Lead group employment activities both on-site and in the community (e.g., parks, farms, warehouses)
Deliver or support job readiness and life skills workshops
Offer constructive feedback to support participant growth and goal achievement
Collaboration & Outreach
Liaise with service providers, employers, and community agencies
Refer participants to external supports as needed (e.g., housing, addiction, legal, food services)
Support the overall function of the drop-in centre, ensuring a welcoming and safe environment
Administrative Tasks
Maintain accurate participant files (hard copy and electronic)
Coordinate placements and assist with transportation to activities
Contribute to team meetings, vacation relief coverage, and other team-based support
Education and Experience
An undergraduate degree in a related field (Career Development Practitioner Certificate, Social Services Diploma) in the community, social services, or employment/career development field.
Minimum 2 years' experience working with marginalized groups of individuals in a direct support role, in particular, people who are experiencing mental health issues, housing insecurity and/or substance use issues.
2-5 years' experience working with Participants facing multiple barriers to employment
An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered
Experience with group facilitation and workshop delivery
Extensive knowledge of local organizations, resources and labour market trends
Demonstrated experience related to mental health needs and addictions
Food Safe certificate
Naloxone training
Valid Class 5 driver's license
Skills and Abilities
An ability to respect all Participants and treat them with dignity
Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to build and maintain strong relationships
Ability to problem-solve, work independently, as well as part of a team
Ability to use sound judgment while working under demanding conditions and circumstances
Ability to maintain good boundaries and adhere to best practices when working with marginalized populations
Skilled in the use of MS 365 (Teams, Excel, Word, Outlook, etc.)
