The key duties of the position include:
The Australian Federal Police (AFP) is the prime law enforcement organisation for the Australian Commonwealth Government. The AFP's responsibility is to investigate, prevent and disrupt transnational, complex and organised crime; including terrorism, cybercrime, extremism, drug smuggling and human trafficking. The AFP is also responsible for policing in the ACT and other Australian dependent territories, providing protective security for politicians, embassy staff and dignitaries, United Nations peacekeeping and acting as Australia's international law enforcement representative.
This role falls within the Business Intelligence section which supports enterprise analytical and integration capabilities. The Data Analytics team maintains the AFP's business intelligence platform, predominantly using SAS Data Integrator and SAS visual analytics to deliver this capability. We are looking for individuals with experience in Data Engineering (ETL) who will be responsible for developing and supporting new or existing data pipelines. Whilst data engineering will be the primary focus of the role the team delivers end-to-end services, this requires candidates to have the ability to engage with stakeholders to elicit requirements and to deliver end user products including reports and dashboards.
The team works with many diverse business areas within the AFP, this gives team members interesting work and the opportunity to broaden and deepen their skills. Whilst experience in SAS technologies is preferred, we recognise data engineering skills from other technologies are transferrable. We are looking for people with relevant experience and a demonstrated ability to learn and adapt quickly to business demands and technological changes.
As a Team Member in the AFP you will be required to contribute to the achievement of outcomes in accordance with the regulatory framework, the AFP Code of Conduct and the AFP Governance Instruments. It is expected that the successful applicant will deliver on the core responsibilities and meet any requirements of the position as outlined below.
What will you do?
The successful candidate will be required to:
Build and maintain data pipeline under minimal supervision
Work collaboratively and communicate well within a self-sufficient scrum team
Develop and support their own and other team members' technical capabilities
Business Analysis including developing business requirements
Establishing and maintaining strong stakeholder relationships
Migrating analytical capabilities between different technologies
Deriving security requirements from business teams and proposing achievable security models to address the requirements
Validating ETL and analytical outputs
Build easy to use dashboards and reports

Eligibility
Essential Requirements
You must be an Australian Citizen at the time of application.
A Negative Vetting 1 (Secret) security clearance or the ability to obtain one.
Has contemporary knowledge and experience relevant to the role.
Minimum of 3+ years demonstrated experience in the Data Engineering domain.
Demonstrated ability to complete complex data engineering tasks.
Demonstrated experience with modern data analytics and data engineering tools.
Demonstrated ability and eagerness to take the initiative to learn new technologies quickly.
Experience in mentoring, coaching and developing team members.
Strong communication and documentation skills.
Ability to work with senior stakeholders.
Desirable Requirements
The following skills and/or experience would be highly regarded:
Demonstrated experience in Visual Analytics and application of User Experience concepts.
Demonstrated experience in ETL development.
ETL/Integration Pipeline experience, such as SAS Data Integration Studio, IBM Data Stage, Informatica or Apache NiFi.
Data Manipulation / Wrangling skills in technologies such as SAS Enterprise Guide, SAS BASE, Python or R.
Strong demonstrated ability to troubleshoot and resolve technical issues.
Formal qualifications from a recognised tertiary institution or demonstrated equivalent skills and experience in Information Management.
Notes
This role can be worked from the following capital cities in Australia - ACT, NSW, TAS, NT, QLD, SA, VIC. Successful applicants are expected to be based in the relevant office location of the position, however remote working options may be negotiated.
This role is an AFP Band Level 7.
