In doing so, the role will directly support Pacific Island Governments and communities to develop locally appropriate responses to climate change.
Job DescriptionThe Adaptation/Loss and Damage Policy Analyst will support Climate Analytics' growing portfolio of Pacific-based adaptation and loss and damage projects.
In doing so, the role will directly support Pacific Island Governments and communities to develop locally appropriate responses to climate change.This particular role will focus upon supporting the delivery of Climate Analytics' flagship project in the Pacific region – the Building Our Pacific Loss and Damage Response (BOLD)project.
The role will provide technical input to the project including leading activities which:Enhance scientific understanding of loss and damage Analyse existing policies and support stakeholders to strengthen future policies and plans Build relationships with project partners and stakeholders to develop locally appropriate responses to Non-Economic Loss and Damage Support future project formulation, including concept notes to enhance access to climate finance.
The successful applicant will be expected to work on other projects which have an adaptation or loss and damage focus.
This may include providing support at UNFCCC negotiations.The role will include travel within, and on occasion outside, the Pacific region and will require strong stakeholder engagement skills and an ability to work effectively in geographically dispersed and culturally diverse teams.Your ResponsibilitiesThis role will be varied but strongly focused on supporting Pacific Island countries on issues of climate adaptation and loss and damage.
Responsibilities may include, but not be limited to:Contributing to desktop assessment of available L&D projection methods Undertaking reviews of existing policies and working with partners and stakeholders to enhance these Conducting qualitative assessment of adaptation limits in 4 target countries Supporting the development and testing of methodologies to assess Non-Economic Loss and Damage (NELD) Supporting the development and delivery of small-scale pilot projects to trial responses to loss and damage, including NELD Contributing to the desktop research on historical experience of economic and non-economic loss and damage in the Pacific Island countries Working with stakeholders and project partners to understand priorities and needs Participating in country missions, including leading stakeholder consultations and facilitating workshops Preparing findings for stakeholder consideration at policy level Developing training materials and information for a variety of audiences Leading and writing technical and non-technical reports Support Climate Analytics' communications team to develop stories media content on projects Support the development of adaptation plans, climate change risk assessment approaches and the translation of adaptation needs into policies and plans Lead the assessment of the current state of adaptation policies and at the national and local levels Lead the identification of existing adaptation practices and potential for other adaptation and corresponding benefits based on known global practices.
About The Diplomacy TeamThis position will be embedded within the Diplomacy Team due to the strategic nature of the projects, which involve engaging with governments, regional organizations, and international forums.
At the same time, the role will require close collaboration with the Implementation Strategies Team, reflecting the emphasis on designing and delivering actionable climate solutions for the Pacific region.
Given the interdisciplinary nature of adaptation work, the position will also work closely with the Science Team, particularly the Adaptation and Loss and Damage Science Group and the Socio-Economic Impacts Group, to ensure that science-based evidence informs the development and implementation of innovative strategies.
This cross-team collaboration is integral to achieving Climate Analytics' mission and maximizing impact in the region.Your profileEssential Skills And ExperienceA master's degree in climate change, climate science, climate change adaptation policy, or a related field.
At least 4 years' experience in climate change adaptation, research, and policy analysis, with a focus on SIDS.
Experience with data analysis, research, climate vulnerability assessment, climate risk analysis.
Good understanding of adaptation and loss and damage policies and plans.
Sound understanding of key concepts underpinning adaptation and loss and damage, including adaptation limits.
Sound knowledge of climate science and its implications for policy.
Sound understanding of the challenges faced by SIDS.
Excellent analytical and writing skills with the ability to summarize and synthesize large volumes of information and/or data for project recommendations/actions.
Proven ability to write on complex issues for a variety of audiences Solid track record of qualitative methods of data collection.
Experience of contributing to the design and delivery of workshops and training.
Strong communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate effectively with diverse stakeholders at all levels, including government, nonprofits and community groups An ability to build trusted professional relationships with partner organisations, ideally in a Pacific context.
Willingness to travel, in some cases to remote locations.
Desirable Skills And ExperienceExperience of working with stakeholders, including Governments, in Pacific Island countries.
A working understanding of current loss and damage finance.
Experience of working in one or more of the following countries: Fiji, Samoa, Republic of Marshall Islands, Tuvalu and Vanuatu.
Experience of integrating Monitoring, Evaluation, Reflection and Learning (MERL) and Gender, Environment, Disability, and Social Inclusion (GEDSI) components into projects in a Pacific context.
