**Job no**: 512685
**Employment type**: Non-Ongoing - Specified Term, Ongoing
**Location**: Sydney
**Categories**: APS Level 5, Science, Engineering, Technical
**About the department**:
The department plays a key role in the Australian Government's agenda to create jobs and build a stronger, more resilient and competitive economy. Our work builds on Australia's existing strengths, supports businesses to grow, and drives new opportunities for long-term productivity growth and prosperity. The success of the department helps Australia recover from the economic consequences of COVID-19 and adapt to its ongoing effects. Through our work, we support the government's economic recovery plan and help to deliver a better future for all Australians.
**About the National Measurement Institute**:
The National Measurement Institute (NMI) is the measurement science and regulatory delivery division of the Department of Industry, Science and Resources (DISR). NMI is a highly technically specialised division, with significant interactions with other parts of government, business, researchers, and other stakeholders across the economy. It is the Australian government's peak measurement authority and the vehicle through which the Commonwealth (the Australian Government) discharges its Constitutional responsibility for weights and measures.
The NMI develops and maintains national measurement standards that are recognised internationally; administers the regulatory framework for measurement in Australia; and delivers world-class measurement products and client services including instrument calibrations, measurement consultancies, and testing and analytical services, including for food, health, safety and the environment.
**About the Physical Metrology Branch**:
The **Physical Metrology branch** leads the development, maintenance and dissemination of Australia's peak physical measurement standards. We provide the assurance that measurements made in Australia are accepted internationally. The branch is an active participant in international measurement forums. Through the delivery of a range of calibrations and other measurement services, branch staff share their expertise with Australian and international stakeholders. This supports research, process improvements, product optimisation and better measurement practice.
**About the Engineering Support Team**:
NMI's Engineering Support Team provides cryogenics, precision engineering and workshop services to the Physical Metrology Branch and the broader NMI. To achieve peak measurement capabilities meeting the needs of Australian industry, NMI scientists and engineers design, construct and operate leading edge measurement facilities and often need to extensively modify complex commercial equipment. Some of these facilities, including quantum measurement standards, require specialised cryogenic infrastructure for their operation.
To meet these requirements, NMI operates state-of-the-art shared workshop and cryogenic facilities, and engages with precision manufacturers in Australia and worldwide. The Engineering Support Team will bring together these diverse capabilities and extend them to meet emerging needs.
**The opportunity**
This is a rare opportunity for a self-motivated and adaptable engineering tradesperson to join one of Australia's cutting edge scientific institutions.
