**Position Information**:
Newcastle Middle School (NMS) is a school for specific purposes (enrolment of 41 students across Year 5-8 with 6 Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander students) and part of the Newcastle School (NS), a unique model in NSW created in 2012 across 3 school sites - Newcastle Junior, Newcastle Middle and Newcastle Senior. Each site has a principal, executive team, teachers, SLSOs, a general assistant and office staff.
Newcastle Middle School students have moderate/severe intellectual disabilities. The vision of the school is to create lifelong opportunities for students by enhancing each student's academic, social and emotional development through innovative practices, and to empower students to be successful learners and valued members of society.
Positive partnerships between families and the wider community play a vital role in enriching student outcomes. In collaboration with parents and carers, staff aim to provide students with the skills, knowledge and values necessary for success. The school works closely with families and community support agencies to encourage and develop the potential of every student.
Integral to Newcastle Middle School are the NESA and Department of Education curriculum requirements, use of Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) framework, processes to support transition between sites, authentic consultation and collaborative partnerships with the wider school community.
**Selection Criteria**:
In addition to the general selection criteria,
- Demonstrated leadership and teaching qualifications in special education to lead evidence informed teaching and learning for students with diverse and complex needs.
- Proven ability to achieve continuous improvement through innovation and change management.
- Demonstrated leadership skills to embed high quality wellbeing initiatives and a culturally safe environment for all.
- Demonstrated ability to lead collaborative partnerships with students, staff, families and external agencies to meet individual student needs.
**General Selection Criteria**:
1. High level educational leadership with the skills to lead and manage a complex public school focused on the delivery of high quality education
2. Ability to lead and manage rigorous and inclusive whole school teaching and learning programs
3. High level communication and interpersonal skills with the capacity to build positive relationships and engage all levels of the school and educational community
4. Ability to lead and manage the development and performance of staff to improve teaching and learning
5. Ability to plan systems and manage resources effectively and equitably to enhance teaching and learning
6. Capacity to lead staff in implementing the Department's Aboriginal education policies and to ensure quality outcomes for Aboriginal people
