Melbourne, Victoria, Australia Court Services Victoria Full time

About us

**The Coroners Court of Victoria (CCOV) is responsible for**:

- Independently investigating deaths and fires. Certain deaths and fires are reported to the Coroners for independent investigation. Their investigations seek to establish the facts - when, where, how, and why the death or fire happened.
- Reducing preventable deaths. Wherever possible, the Coroner will suggest ways to prevent similar deaths or fires by making well informed and practical recommendations, based on the evidence before them.
- Promoting public health and safety and the administration of justice. CCOV regularly reports on data and trends regarding preventable deaths in Victoria to help inform public health responses.

**About the Coroners Prevention Unit**:
The Coroners Prevention Unit (CPU) is a service established to assist Coroners in identifying opportunities to strengthen public health and safety through well-researched, evidence-based recommendations. It is the only multidisciplinary team of its kind in Australia, comprising specialist staff who work to identify any potential failures and other factors that contributed to the incident. Coroners can refer matters to the CPU at any point during an investigation. Additionally, the CPU undertakes both individual and collaborative research projects to support coronial investigations, underpinning a better understanding of preventable deaths in Victoria.
About the role
The CPU maintains a number of databases which store detailed information on reportable deaths that are investigated by Coroners. This includes the Aboriginal Passings database. This information is used to inform Coroners' investigations and contribute to relevant publications. It is also requested by external bodies, such as Aboriginal Organisations and Community as appropriate.

**The responsibilities include**:

- Searching the Aboriginal and other databases to identify deaths and collate information about them.
- Analysing data including the collation and analysis of coronial findings and recommendations made in relation to Aboriginal passings.
- Preparing reports for Coroners, business units of CCOV and external organisations.

About you

**We are looking for a data driven professional with**:

- A demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the Victorian Aboriginal Community, both society and culture and the issues impacting on it.
- The ability to read and understand a wide range of material and identify the relevant information contained within it.
- Capacity to focus on complex tasks for extended periods of time.
- Expertise to navigate digital technologies, systems, and related software, including databases.

How to apply
- resume
- a cover letter (not exceeding two pages) demonstrating attributes and experience relevant to the role (see the Key Selection criteria in the PD)
- response to the following question (in addition to the two pages above):
The Coroners Court is an environment that can expose staff to images, case history, testimony and behaviour that can cause stress and/or distress at times.

**Question**: What strategies would you employ to help deal with these potential stressors?
