The University of Technology Sydney and Vividhata Pty Ltd. have a scholarship from the National Industry PhD Program available for a PhD student to study in the field of Virtual Reality and 3D data processing.
Project Title
Interactive 3D Reconstruction in Virtual Reality for Training, Education and Communication
Study load (Full-time / Part-time) : Full Time
Expected Commencement Date : January 2026
Scholarship Funding Available : $37,000 per annum
Project Description The successful application with pursue PhD studies with the goal of developing a Virtual Reality (VR) experience in which a participant can move freely in a 3D scanned environment scanned from a real environment with 3D scanned actors that adjust themselves in relation to a participant's position and actions.
This will lead to greater immersion and interactivity which leads to greater engagement and better learning outcomes.
To achieve the above, our aims are to create more immersive and interactive VR experiences based on scanned real world scenarios.
This will be achieved by the following research :
Firstly, developing software to allow the representation of 3D Gaussian Splatting (3DGS) radiance fields on commercial VR headsets.
Secondly, real world scenes and actors will be scanned and imported into the 3DGS environments.
Finally, Generative AI will be used to animate the actors within the 3DGS environment to be rendered in high fidelity in a manner that allows for real time motion and response to learner interactions.
Project Aims
Current VR experiences with interactivity use Computer Generated Imagery (CGI) due to the difficulties of free interaction and movement within high fidelity environments and with real actors / characters.
However, development of CGI characters / environments requires high costs to be 3D and photo-realistic making this infeasible for training scenario development for most organisations.
The result is either low quality CGI environments / actors that fall short and detract from the sense of engagement or scenes with real actors with limited interaction by the participant.
The goal of this PhD study is to conduct advanced 3DGS research to render representations of real world scenes at low cost that are high fidelity and allow for real time interaction by learners, where 3DGS scanned actors-characters behaviours and movements are guided by the learner actions in the environment.
Applicant Requirements Applicants should have a research oriented Masters degree with associated related publications in high-ranking journals and / or conferences.
Applicants need to meet entry requirements for a PhD degree at the University of Technology Sydney.
International candidates must meet visa requirements for study in Australia.
The ideal applicant has a strong background in 3D visualisation and virtual reality, with extensive past work in computer vision and 3D data processing.
Ideally, they have already touched on 3D Gaussian Splatting and 3D scanning and has the necessary machine-learning and technical background for working in Unity for the representation of VR environments and knowledge of generative AI for avatar control and interaction.
They should be comfortable operating with large datasets, algorithms and training models to accomplish this.
