About Yung Prodigy:
Yung Prodigy is a youth-led and youth-run organisation founded on lived experience. We focus on mobilising young people impacted by parental and kinship incarceration, addressing an often-invisible issue and policy gap in Australian service provision. This gap impacts an estimated 40,000+ young people.
Our vision is to
liberate young people
from the impacts of the carceral system, equipping them with the skills, resources, and community support needed to dismantle cycles of systemic disadvantage. Yung Prodigy operates through five key avenues being; research, advocacy, education, mentorship, and nourishment.
Yung Prodigy builds strong community networks, empowered youth advocates, and improved wellbeing for young people. Ultimately, Yung Prodigy's work fosters systemic change, creating pathways to thrive that steer away from carceral cycles. By centring the voices of lived experience, we aim to dismantle intergenerational cycles of incarceration and disadvantage.
Purpose and Description of Position:
Yung Prodigy is seeking new Board Directors to guide our organisation in supporting young people impacted by parental incarceration. As a Director, you'll shape strategy, ensure strong governance, and uphold our values of transparency, intersectionality, grassroots, and community. We welcome diverse skills and experiences, united by a shared commitment to social justice. This voluntary role requires a 2 year term, with quarterly Board meetings and additional participation as required.
Key Responsibilities:
Strategic Leadership:
Contribute to the development and implementation of strategic plans that align with the organisation's mission to mobilise young people affected by parental incarceration.
Governance and Oversight:
Ensure that the organisation adheres to legal standards and ethical norms, maintains financial accountability, and operates transparently.
Advocacy and Representation:
Act as an advocate for Yung Prodigy, representing the organisation at public events and within networks to enhance its profile and impact where necessary.
Resource Mobilisation:
Assist in obtaining sufficient funds and resource development efforts to secure the financial health and sustainability of the organisation.
Program Development:
Provide input into program planning and evaluation to ensure that initiatives effectively address the needs of young people impacted by parental incarceration.
Stakeholder Engagement:
Foster relationships with key stakeholders, to advance the organisation's objectives.
Utilise skills:
utilise skills to strategically build Yung Prodigy through the unique lens you bring.
Qualifications:
Commitment to the mission of Yung Prodigy and understanding of the challenges faced by young people with incarcerated parents.
Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage effectively with diverse groups.
Strategic thinking and problem-solving skills.
A background in either governance, finance or legal professions in the social sector is highly desired however not mandatory.
Availability to attend board meetings and dedicate time to committee responsibilities and events where relevant.
Commitment:
The position requires a minimum commitment of two years, with the possibility of renewal. The Board must meet at a minimum of 4 times per year, in line with Yung Prodigy's governing document. Board members are expected to participate in additional committee meetings or functions as required/relevant.
