Austin Health is one of Victoria's major health services. We provide care across three campuses in Melbourne's north-east: Austin Hospital (including the Olivia Newton-John Cancer Wellness and Research Centre), Heidelberg Repatriation Hospital and the Royal Talbot Rehabilitation Centre, as well as in the community and at home.

The Emergency Department services approximately 88,000 patients per year, about 20% of whom are paediatric patients. The admission rate is of the order of 33%. The Emergency Department aims to provide safe, timely, effective person centred care by appropriately assessing and managing patients with a clear disposition plan, be it discharge or admission to a wide range of specialties provided by the health service. This service will be delivered in a, kind and compassionate manner, enhanced through teaching, research and the development of new technologies, processes and models of care. The Emergency Department is staffed by a multidisciplinary team which aims to provide high quality care to all patients. The Short Stay Unit is a 24-bed unit, including paediatric, adult and mental health beds. It is closely associated with the Emergency Department. Patients admitted to Short Stay will have a rapidly reversible condition which either requires a short period of treatment or observation. The length of stay within the Short Stay Unit is 24 hours or less.

Position Purpose:
In collaboration with the Director of Emergency Medicine Research and Quality Improvement the Emergency Department Research Assistant will facilitate the implementation of research to align with the overall direction of the Emergency Department, Medicine Services and the Austin Health Research Framework.
- To support research projects of all Austin Emergency Department researchers by assisting in the conduct and implementation of research, data analysis and support to publication readiness.
- Provide visible expertise, guidance to staff within the Emergency Department in research methodology and increase capacity for research across all craft groups and teams within the Emergency Department
- Achieve grant success to ensure the Emergency Medicine Research Program is sustainable and has a solid foundation from which to grow in number, quality and impact of projects undertaken
- Possess sufficient knowledge in the discipline and of research methods and techniques to work within established research programmes
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Able to communicate material of a specialist or highly technical nature
- Able to manage research and administrative activities and to balance competing pressures of research and administrative demands and deadlines
- Good interpersonal skills with the ability to liaise with colleagues and students
- Able to build contacts and participate in internal and external networks for the exchange of information and collaboration.
- Able to identify potential sources of funding
