About usThe Department of Government Services (DGS) wasestablishedon 1 January 2023 to improve everyone's experience of doing business and interacting with the Victorian government.We bring important day-to-day services together in one department to make things easy and seamless for Victorians and businesses.We are doing this by connecting and digitising our systems and platforms across state and local government as well as streamlining our corporate and procurement services.About the roleThe ideal Senior Platform Engineer will be a hands-on technical expert with strong experience in cloud-native infrastructure, infrastructure-as-code, CI/CD pipelines, and platform reliability.
This person will play a key role in the design and delivery of scalable platform solutions, supporting the deployment and operation of business-critical applications such as RIO.
The Senior Platform Engineer will work closely with engineering teams, vendors, and internal stakeholders to ensure infrastructure meets the security, compliance, and performance needs of the business.The scope of work includes designing and implementing cloud infrastructure (AWS), managing Kubernetes and ECS platforms, automating infrastructure provisioning, supporting container-based application deployments, and driving continuous improvement of platform reliability and developer experience.
This role may also involve contributing to cross-agency platform initiatives, enhancing observability, and providing mentorship to other engineers in the teamAbout youTo be considered for the role, you must be able to demonstrate:Guides others in operating digital and technology tools relevant to area of work.
Understands the impact of internal IT landscape to daily operations; Has broad understanding on implementation activities related to the introduction and ongoing maintenance of new digital and technology toolsAssesses effectiveness of service delivery against leading services; Challenges others to deliver service excellence; Looks for long term benefits to the clientProficient with tools such as Terraform, AWS CDK, and CloudFormation to build and manage consistent infrastructure across environments.Advocate for GitOps, automation, observability, and resilience through platform engineering and site reliability principles.Solid understanding of cloud networking (VPC, DNS, routing) and experience managing Linux systems, backups, patching, certificates, and shell scripting.Experience in Infrastructure as Code – CDK, CloudFormation and TerraformParticipate in a 24/7 on-call rotation, owning incident response and the operational health of supported services.Any previous experience working in a government environment would be highly regardedMandatory requirementsAdvanced experience in AWS ecosystem – in addition GCP and Azure would be high desirableExperience in Infrastructure as Code – CDK, CloudFormation and TerraformKey accountabilitiesDemonstrated expertise working within the AWS ecosystem, with hands-on experience across a wide variety of services including but not limited to ECS, EKS, Lambda, SNS, SQS, CloudFront, WAF, Secrets Manager, RDS, DynamoDB, and Transit Gateway.Proven experience with modern DevOps methodologies, including GitOps, ChatOps, and DevSecOps, and a strong understanding of infrastructure automation and reliability principles.Deep experience in designing, building, and maintaining CI/CD pipelines in a cloud environment.
Familiarity with GitHub Actions or similar CI/CD platforms is highly desirable.Strong knowledge and practical experience with container technologies such as Docker, and orchestration platforms including Kubernetes, Amazon EKS and ECS.Collaborate with engineering squads across all digital platforms to deliver reliable, scalable, and secure infrastructure and services in a fast-paced, customer-focused environment.Support and operate a new, cutting-edge production platform with a strong focus on meeting defined SLAs and SLOs, ensuring high availability and performance.Responsible for meeting service objectives, including financial, quality and time related targets for programs or major projectsPrepare technical reports at an authoritative levelBriefs high level stakeholders in own area of expertise in a variety of forumsFor specificresponsibilitiesplease review the attached position description.This position is only open to applicants with relevant rights to work in Australia.How to applyApply before the advertised closing date 11:59pm on 14th September 2025.
