Manage a multi-region team of 4-9 engineers, taking ownership of backend systems powering Zeller's terminal and ecommerce platforms.This role offers high-impact technical leadership with formal management responsibilities, working closely with your team and staying deeply technical as a player-coach.About the TeamThe Payments BFF team builds customer-facing APIs and systems enabling millions of payments monthly for Australian businesses.
Collaborating with product managers, designers, and other engineering groups, your team will build and scale core products like terminal and ecommerce payments, settlements, and more.ResponsibilitiesDrive architectural solutions collaboratively to build and scale Zeller's payments platform.Write production code regularly as a core contributor while overseeing your team's technical deliverables.Own operational excellence, including monitoring, incident response, and reliability improvements.Champion modern development practices, including the use of LLMs and other technical innovations.Lead and develop a team of 4-9 engineers, fostering a culture of learning, ownership, and psychological safety.Partner with product managers to shape product development and technical strategy.QualificationsExperience owning backend systems and scaling customer-facing platforms.Proven track record mentoring software engineers and uplifting team capabilities.Experience in product-driven companies with a focus on delivery speed.Expertise in backend system design, with rational decision-making skills.Excellent communication skills, able to liaise with non-technical stakeholders and translate requirements for engineering teams.Strong self-learning drive, actively incorporating AI tools into workflows.Experience with payment acquiring systems is highly valued.Technical SkillsProficiency in writing production TypeScript code.Familiarity with serverless, event-driven architecture on AWS, including Lambda, EventBridge, API Gateway, SQS.Experience with relational and NoSQL databases like Aurora Postgres and DynamoDB.Knowledge of application monitoring tools such as CloudTrail, X-Ray, Datadog.Experience with infrastructure as code (CDK, Terraform) and comprehensive testing practices.Work EnvironmentThis role is based in Melbourne CBD, with a typical expectation of 4 days on-site and 1 day WFH per week.BenefitsCompetitive salary and equity options.Supportive and progressive work environment.Generous parental leave and other benefits.Modern office and social activities.Opportunities for learning and professional growth.Influence the future of Zeller as it scales domestically and globally.Inclusive CultureWe celebrate diverse perspectives and encourage applications from all backgrounds.
