About the role

We're offering a unique opportunity for a Student Planner to gain hands-on experience in a progressive, customer-first planning environment. This temporary, part-time position is designed to complement your studies while building your professional capabilities. Over 12 months, you'll rotate between two key areas.

The Statutory Planning Unit, working on planning applications, including:

  • Single dwelling developments and extension applications
  • Multi-unit development applications
  • Heritage applications
  • Industrial and commercial applications
  • Applications adjacent to our valued creek environments the Planning Administration Unit, where you'll learn the foundations of planning processes and customer service.

This rotation provides a comprehensive view of the end-to-end planning journey, from administration to project outcomes. You'll be supported by experienced planners and contribute to delivering high-quality land use and development outcomes for our community.

About City of Darebin and Council

Darebin is situated on the Traditional Owner lands of the Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung people. It is home to many Aboriginal community-controlled organisations, and a large number of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people work, live and play within the municipality.

Key Responsibilities and Duties

Some of the key responsibilities and duties of the positions include, under supervision:

  • Prepare reports and recommendations to Council's Statutory Planning delegate on minor planning applications and amendments, assessment of plans to comply with conditions of permit and on other statutory matters, as required.
  • Confer with permit applicants, objectors, internal and external government agencies and other interested parties to resolve planning issues.
  • Prepare advice and respond to inquiries and property information requests.
  • Prepare advice on enquiries of a development and land use nature.
  • Provide quality and professional advice to internal and external departments, agencies, developers and the community regarding planning legislation, regulations, policies and procedures.
  • Prepare internal and external correspondence.
  • Assist with the development of services, projects and programs provided by the department.
  • Undertake regular site inspections in relation to planning applications and other matters.
  • Other duties as directed within the skills and capabilities of a position at this level.

Skills & Experience

Several of the key skills and experiences of the positions include:

  • General knowledge of planning, and related legislation impacting on the municipality, the planning scheme, local laws and Council policy.
  • Ability to research and analyse planning related issues.
  • Ability to manage time, set priorities and prepare and implement work plans to achieve desired results within the resources and time available.
  • Knowledge of customer service principles and practice and demonstrated ability to apply these skills in day to day work.
