Kalwun Development Corporation Ltd is an Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander community controlled organisation currently seeking to fill the following vacancy within our Jellurgal division. Nestled at the base of Burleigh Head National Park, Jellurgal Aboriginal Cultural Centre is the Gold Coast's only dedicated Aboriginal cultural centre, fully owned and operated by the local Aboriginal community.

About the Role

The Jellurgal First Nations Ranger will assist in caring for Country on Jellurgal (Burleigh Headland National Park) through land management, visitor engagement, and cultural site protection. The role involves supporting environmental monitoring, conservation projects, weed and pest control, and general park maintenance to ensure the area's ecological health. Rangers will share cultural knowledge with visitors, helping to foster respect and understanding of the land's significance. The position works closely with Traditional Custodians, Elders, and partner organisations to ensure cultural protocols are upheld. The ranger position is an entry level position for Aboriginal and Torrs Strait Islander people seeking a position that will facilitate care for Country and the professional development of employees. This is a casual position with hours ranging between 15-25 per week.

Position Duties

  • Environmental management activities including weed control, rubbish removal, track maintenance, and habitat restoration
  • Assist with the implementation of fire management strategies
  • Support monitoring of local flora, fauna, and environmental health, including threatened species management
  • Support opportunities for cultural knowledge sharing between Elders, Rangers, and visitors
  • Work with team members to deliver culturally respectful content for visitors and school groups, sharing the stories, history, and cultural significance of Jellurgal
  • Promote visitor understanding of conservation
  • Actively participate in professional development and leadership training to strengthen skills and build cultural capability
  • Ensure compliance with workplace health and safety requirements and environmental regulations
  • Promote a safe, supportive, and culturally inclusive workplace
  • Maintain accurate records of ranger activities, incidents, and environmental monitoring.

Essential Selection Criteria

  1. A passion for natural resource management, land care, or conservation.
  2. General knowledge of local Aboriginal cultural protocols
  3. Good communication skills with the ability to engage respectfully with community members, Elders, and the public
  4. Ability to operate in a team environment
  5. Attention to detail
  6. Ability to work outdoors in varied weather conditions.

  • This position requires the successful applicant to satisfy a national criminal history check and hold a current drivers' license.
