Wagga Wagga NSW, Australia The Perennial Full time

Apprentice Chef – The Perennial

Wagga Wagga, NSW | Start: January 2026

Are you looking to start your career in food with a hands-on apprenticeship in a busy, quality-driven café?

The Perennial is a small modern Australian café located in Kooringal, Wagga Wagga, known for thoughtful food, excellent coffee, and a creative, supportive team. We're seeking a motivated Apprentice Chef to join us from January 2026.

This role offers genuine mentorship from two qualified chefs, combining real kitchen experience with structured TAFE training.

The role

  • 38 hours per week
  • Typically 4 days working in the kitchen + 1 day at TAFE
  • Breakfast and lunch service only
  • Trading Monday to Saturday
  • Closed Sundays, public holidays, and 2 weeks over Christmas

You'll be involved in all areas of kitchen operations, including preparation, service, plating, and learning modern Australian cooking techniques using high-quality produce. As your apprenticeship progresses, you'll build skills in flavour development, time management, kitchen systems, and teamwork.

What we're looking for

  • A genuine interest in food, cooking, and hospitality
  • Strong work ethic, reliability, and a positive attitude
  • Ability to take direction, accept feedback, and learn quickly
  • Comfort working in a fast-paced environment

Kitchen work can be physically demanding and stressful during service. We work hard, communicate clearly, and support each other to get through busy periods as a team.

Please note: a big part of any cooking job is cleaning and organisation. Maintaining a clean, safe, and well-organised kitchen is essential and non-negotiable.

Who this role will suit

  • Someone who enjoys being busy and working on their feet
  • A person who thrives in team environments
  • Anyone excited by learning real-world kitchen skills from experienced chefs

What we offer

  • Mentorship from two experienced, qualified chefs
  • A fun, supportive, and creative team environment
  • All usual entitlements for leave and breaks
  • 75% staff meal discount while on shift
  • A healthier work–life balance than many hospitality roles
