What you'll do

  • Perform assigned routine sample preparation and chemical analysis for measurement of inorganic components (elemental composition, water parameters and disinfection by-products, trace metal and nutrient analysis) in biological, food, water, soil/sediment, and other environmental matrices.
  • Undertake assigned calibration, operation, and maintenance of analytical instrumentation.
  • Actively participate in the process of continuous improvement under the supervision of more experienced practitioners, to enhance the capability of the Inorganic Chemistry laboratory.
  • Comply with requirements for biosecurity and quarantine as specified by the Australian Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry.
  • Actively participate in quality assurance and quality improvement activities across the Inorganic Chemistry laboratory including calibrations, verifications, and standard operating procedures to ensure that the laboratory's quality system is maintained as required by NATA/ISO accreditation.
  • Comply with and utilise procedures, policies, regulations, and standards which impact upon the position, including the Queensland Health Code of Conduct, contemporary human resource management requirements and practices, such as Workplace Health and Safety, Infection Control, Equal Employment Opportunity and Anti-Discrimination Policy.

About you

We are searching for someone who has:

  • Technical knowledge and experience, or the ability to rapidly acquire skills in sample preparation and chemical analysis, with a focus on inorganic chemical testing.
  • Competent level of knowledge and skills, or ability to acquire skills, in the operation and maintenance of state-of-the-art analytical instrumentation.
  • Ability to undertake routine tasks, with developing ability to undertake more complex tasks under the guidance of a more experienced health practitioner.
  • Competent level of knowledge and use of IT and MS Office applications.
  • Proven ability to work cooperatively in a multidisciplinary team providing support to the Inorganic Chemistry team and guidance to peers.
  • Attention to detail and a high level of accuracy in completion of work to meet laboratory and client expectations for outstanding service.
  • A Diploma or Advanced Diploma, tertiary, or equivalent formal qualification(s) in Science (e.g. Chemistry, Laboratory Techniques or similar) from a recognised university or tertiary institution or equivalent as determined by the Chief Executive or delegate; or sufficient experience in a chemistry laboratory to demonstrate competence against the key criteria.
