Azure FinOps Engineer

Sydney, New South Wales, Australia Avance Consulting Full time

Role Summary

We are seeking a
hands-on Azure FinOps Engineer
to drive visibility, optimization, and automation of cloud costs across our Azure environment — spanning Synapse Analytics, Azure Databricks, Azure Data Lake / ADLS Gen2, AI Foundry, Fabric OneLake, Azure Machine Learning, Azure Synapse Serverless / Spark, Azure Cosmos DB, Azure Data Explorer, and related services

The ideal candidate can
analyze, estimate, and optimize
Azure costs in real time and work directly with engineering teams to deliver measurable savings.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Hands-on Cost Analysis & Optimization

  • Perform detailed cost breakdowns across Azure services (Synapse, Databricks, Fabric, AI Foundry, ML, Cosmos DB, Data Explorer, etc.).
  • Identify inefficiencies — idle clusters, overprovisioned VMs, untagged resources, and orphaned storage.
  • Implement optimization techniques like
    autoscaling
    ,
    spot instances
    ,
    reservations
    ,
    savings plans
    , and
    hybrid benefit
    strategies.
  • Tune Synapse and Databricks queries, pipelines, and jobs for cost efficiency.
  • Apply
    storage lifecycle management
    ,
    tiering (Hot/Cool/Archive)
, and data retention best practices in ADLS/OneLake.

2. Forecasting & Modeling

  • Build cost models for upcoming workloads and infrastructure changes.
  • Conduct "what-if" analyses to project cost impacts of scaling or service selection.
  • Generate forecasts and consumption reports at the environment, workspace, or project level.
  • Support architecture reviews by providing
    TCO
    and
    ROI
    insights for design options.

3. Automation & Reporting

  • Automate cost data extraction using
    Azure Cost Management APIs
    ,
    Azure Resource Graph
    , and
    Log Analytics
    .
  • Build
    Power BI / Fabric dashboards
for self-service cost visibility and anomaly detection.
  • Integrate cost alerts with Teams/Email/Logic Apps to highlight overspend or deviation from budgets.
  • Create reusable templates (Bicep/Terraform) with embedded cost controls and tagging standards.

4. Governance & Collaboration

  • Design and enforce
    FinOps governance frameworks
across subscriptions, management groups, and landing zones.
  • Set up tagging, budget, and cost-allocation policies using
    Azure Policy
    ,
    Blueprints
    , and
    Defender for Cloud recommendations
    .
  • Partner with
Finance, Cloud Platform, Data Engineering, and AI
teams to embed FinOps in CI/CD processes.
  • Conduct monthly cost optimization reviews and share savings recommendations with stakeholders.
  • Promote a
    FinOps culture
through training and engineering playbooks for cost-aware design.

Required Skills & Experience

  • 6–10 years in Azure cloud environments (data or platform focus).
  • Proven, hands-on expertise in
    Azure Cost Management
    ,
    Budgets
    ,
    Pricing Calculator
    , and
    Advisor
    .
  • Strong working knowledge of:
  • Data Services:
Synapse Analytics, Azure Databricks, Azure Data Factory, ADLS Gen2 / OneLake, Databricks Stack
  • AI Services:
Azure AI Foundry, Azure Machine Learning, Cognitive Services
  • Compute & Storage:
Virtual Machines, AKS, App Services, Functions, Blob Storage
  • Proficiency in
    Python
    ,
    PowerShell
    , or
    Azure CLI
    for automation.
  • Strong SQL and
    Power BI/Fabric experience
    for dashboarding and analytics.
  • Knowledge of
Azure Reservations, Savings Plans, Spot VMs
    , and hybrid benefits.
  • Excellent analytical and communication skills — able to translate cost insights into business outcomes.
