Who are we?
UNSW College is a values-based organisation committed to student success and opening worlds of possibilities for learning. We believe that educating with heart is the key to unlocking everyone's potential.
At UNSW College, we work collaboratively to drive innovation and excellence in our teaching and learning, in our governance and operations and, most importantly, to build the community we believe is essential to enrich our students' experience.
Who are you?
You're passionate about cybersecurity and have hands-on experience monitoring, detecting, and responding to security incidents in a dynamic environment. You thrive on safeguarding digital assets and infrastructure, and you're keen to keep your skills sharp and up to date. You're a team player who enjoys collaborating across IT and business units, but you're also comfortable working independently and taking initiative.
You're detail-oriented, analytical, and calm under pressure. Your strong communication skills and customer focus mean you can clearly articulate issues and provide support to users at all levels. You're committed to continuous improvement, compliance, and helping to build a culture of security awareness, while managing risk, liaising with vendors, and producing quality documentation.

You understand cybersecurity frameworks such as ISO 27001, and you're familiar with data privacy requirements (GDPR, Australian Privacy Act, DLP solutions). Industry certifications such as Security+, CISSP, or similar are highly regarded.
What will you do?
The purpose of the Cybersecurity Engineer role is to maintain and enhance the day-to-day security posture of UNSW College. You'll play a critical role in monitoring security platforms, triaging and escalating incidents, and supporting the implementation of operational security controls. You'll work closely with IT and business units to ensure compliance, contribute to security awareness, and drive continuous improvement in security operations and processes.
Key responsibilities will include but not be limited to:
- Monitor SIEM and other security platforms for alerts; triage and escalate incidents as needed.
- Execute first and second-level response procedures for security incidents, including containment, investigation, and documentation.
- Administer and maintain endpoint protection, email security, firewalls, and other security infrastructure.
- Run vulnerability scans, log findings, and coordinate remediation with relevant teams.
- Assist with access reviews, privilege management, and user provisioning/deprovisioning.
- Respond to user-reported phishing attempts, suspicious activity, and other routine security inquiries.
- Maintain operational runbooks, incident logs, and compliance records to support audits and governance.
- Collaborate with IT infrastructure and applications teams, as well as external security partners, to ensure secure configurations and timely resolution of security issues.
- Contribute to internal awareness campaigns and user education efforts.
- Support secure software development practices and contribute to data governance, classification, and privacy-by-design initiatives.
The successful applicant will have (but not limited to):
- Demonstrated experience in security operations, threat detection, and incident response.
- Experience with Microsoft 365 Security, endpoint protection, email security, firewalls, and vulnerability management.
- Understanding of cybersecurity best practices, processes, and protocols.
- Knowledge of data security and privacy requirements.
- Well-developed analytical and problem-solving skills in troubleshooting complex IT environments.
- Industry-recognised certifications (Security+, CISSP, or similar) and/or a degree in Computing or related discipline are highly regarded.
