About The Role
The Cancer Program Coordinator plays a vital role in supporting the health and wellbeing of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people through the development of culturally safe, community-led cancer prevention, screening and care initiatives.

This role focuses on raising awareness, delivering education and empowering communities to make positive health choices. You'll work closely with health centre teams, families and local stakeholders to support cancer care navigation and improve early detection and treatment pathways.

A key focus will be supporting and coordinating the delivery of culturally appropriate education, health promotion and engagement activities in communities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver cancer prevention, awareness, and screening programs in partnership with community and health centre teams.
  • Provide culturally relevant education and resources to clients and families.
  • Coordinate the development and sharing of appropriate health literacy materials.
  • Support patients and families to navigate cancer treatment pathways including appointments, referrals, and follow-up care.
  • Promote cultural safety in cancer care settings.
  • Act as a liaison between health services and communities to reduce barriers to care.
  • Build strong relationships with hospitals, oncology units and allied health services.
  • Work collaboratively with regional and national networks to strengthen culturally appropriate cancer care models.
  • Participate in case conferences and local care planning activities.

About You
You are passionate about community health, health promotion and culturally safe care. You enjoy engaging with community, coordinating local activities and supporting people through complex health journeys.

Essential Criteria

  • Qualification in Health Promotion, Public Health, Community Development, Nursing, Allied Health, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Work or a related field (or equivalent experience).
  • Understanding of social determinants of health affecting Aboriginal people in remote communities.
  • Experience in health promotion and community education.
  • Knowledge of cancer care pathways and the impact of cancer on individuals and families.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a culturally safe, trauma-informed, and person-centred way.
  • Competent in using Microsoft Office and client information systems.

Desirable

  • Experience in care coordination, case management or patient navigation.
  • Knowledge of national cancer strategies and programs (e.g., Closing the Gap, National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Cancer Framework).
  • Experience in Aboriginal health or community-controlled organisations.
  • Data collection and reporting skills.
  • Strong communication, relationship-building and advocacy skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.

Other Requirements

  • Current Working with Children Check and National Police Clearance (or ability to obtain).
  • Current Driver's Licence.
  • Willingness to travel, including to remote communities via 4WD and light aircraft.
