An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Senior Tax Consultant to join a highly respected finance team based in the heart of Sydney CBD. This role offers you the chance to work on a diverse range of direct and indirect tax matters, supporting both Australian and international projects. You will play a pivotal part in ensuring high-quality tax compliance, providing expert advice on project bids and transactions, and contributing to strategic initiatives that drive continuous improvement across the business. With a competitive salary package of $120,000, this position is perfect for someone who values professional growth, enjoys collaborating with knowledgeable colleagues, and thrives in an environment that encourages flexible working opportunities and ongoing learning. If you are looking to take your career to the next level within a supportive and inclusive team, this could be the ideal move for you.
What You'll Do
As a Senior Tax Consultant, you will immerse yourself in a broad spectrum of responsibilities that span from hands-on preparation of corporate tax returns to providing insightful support on major project bids. Your day-to-day will involve close collaboration with various teams across the business as you ensure timely delivery of all compliance obligations while also playing an integral role in strategic projects that shape the future direction of the organisation's tax function. You will have ample opportunity to demonstrate your technical expertise through managing external reviews, preparing comprehensive reports for senior leadership, and advising on complex transactions. By actively participating in continuous improvement initiatives, you will help drive efficiency within the team while building trusted relationships both internally and externally. Your ability to balance routine tasks with ad hoc requests will be essential as you contribute meaningfully to the success of both local and international projects.
- Deliver high-quality, technically accurate tax compliance deliverables within agreed deadlines, ensuring all reporting obligations are met for both corporate and project entities.
- Prepare corporate tax returns and Fringe Benefits Tax (FBT) returns across the group, maintaining meticulous attention to detail throughout each process.
- Review project tax returns thoroughly, ensuring accuracy and compliance with relevant legislation for both domestic and international operations.
- Manage external reviews of corporate and project returns by liaising effectively with external advisers in Australia and offshore jurisdictions.
- Support the Tax Director with board reporting and tax forecasting activities, including preparing detailed tax papers for board meetings.
- Provide advice and assistance on project bids by reviewing external project tax opinions and offering ad hoc advisory support for transactions as required.
- Assist with key strategic tax projects that contribute to business improvement programmes and enhance overall tax processes.
- Work efficiently alongside other departments to foster a collaborative approach towards achieving shared business objectives.
- Champion continuous improvement initiatives in tax compliance by identifying opportunities to streamline processes and implement best practices.
- Build strong relationships internally and externally by contributing proactively to the provision of ad hoc tax advice and supporting ATO engagement programmes.
What You Bring
To excel as a Senior Tax Consultant in this role, your background should reflect substantial experience gained from reputable corporate environments where you have managed diverse aspects of direct and indirect taxation. Your proven track record will include not only technical proficiency but also an ability to communicate complex concepts clearly—both verbally and in writing—to colleagues across different functions. You will bring an organised mindset capable of balancing daily operational needs with longer-term improvement initiatives. Your natural inclination towards collaboration ensures you thrive when working closely with others on cross-functional projects or during periods of change. Above all else, your integrity, resilience under pressure, commitment to ethical conduct, and enthusiasm for ongoing learning will set you apart as someone who can make a meaningful contribution from day one.
- Hold tertiary qualifications in Business/Tax or Tax Law, demonstrating a solid academic foundation relevant to this specialist field.
- Possess at least 3-5 years' experience working within a corporate tax division—whether at a Big 4 firm, tier 2 practice or an in-house team—with proven breadth of exposure across multiple areas.
- Showcase general experience across income tax matters including international taxation issues, Capital Gains Tax (CGT), Fringe Benefits Tax (FBT), and Goods & Services Tax (GST).
- Display infrastructure, property or Mergers & Acquisitions (M&A) experience as an added advantage that would be highly regarded by the team.
- Exhibit exceptional attention to detail when handling complex data sets or preparing statutory documents under tight deadlines.
- Demonstrate excellent organisational skills with an ability to prioritise competing demands while remaining proactive in planning workloads efficiently.
- Communicate clearly through strong verbal and written skills that enable effective interaction with colleagues at all levels as well as external stakeholders.
- Embody resilience by maintaining ethical standards at all times—even when faced with challenging situations—and showing commitment to continuous personal development.
- Foster positive interpersonal relationships through empathy, dependability, and a collaborative approach that supports knowledge sharing within the team.
