Position Overview

The Pipelayer is responsible for the installation, alignment, and joining of pipes for stormwater, sewer, and water infrastructure projects in accordance with project specifications, safety standards, and quality requirements. The role requires close collaboration with the site crew, machinery operators, and supervisors to ensure efficient and accurate construction outcomes.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lay, align, and join various types of pipes (RCP, PVC, GRP, PE, steel) for stormwater, sewer, and water systems.
  • Interpret and work from drawings, plans, and levels to ensure correct installation and grade.
  • Excavate, prepare, and backfill trenches in compliance with project and safety standards.
  • Install and align pits, manholes, and associated structures.
  • Assist plant operators with trenching, lifting, and placement activities.
  • Conduct pre-start checks and use tools, machinery, and equipment safely.
  • Ensure work is performed in compliance with GCE Contractors' safety and quality procedures.
  • Maintain good communication with supervisors and other crew members.
  • Report hazards, incidents, or defects immediately.
  • Perform general labouring tasks as required to support site operations.
Skills and Experience
  • Minimum 2 years' experience as a Pipelayer or similar civil construction role.
  • Experience with installation of sewer, water, or stormwater pipelines.
  • Ability to read and interpret civil drawings and set levels.
  • Understanding of trench shoring, confined spaces, and safe excavation practices.
  • Competent use of hand and power tools.
  • Physically fit and capable of manual labour in outdoor environments.
Qualifications and Tickets
  • Construction White Card (essential)
  • Current Driver's Licence (essential)
  • Confined Space Entry ticket (highly desirable)
  • Excavation Awareness / Trenching and Shoring training (desirable)
  • VOCs or RII tickets for operating small plant (advantageous)
  • First Aid and CPR (desirable)

Employment Conditions

  • Hourly rate based on experience and qualifications, in line with the Civil Construction Award / GCE EBA
