About the Intensive Care Unit
The Austin Health Intensive Care Unit is a 35-bed unit with 29 ICU equivalent beds funded. We provide the state-wide and Tasmanian specialty service for liver transplant, fulminant liver failure, spinal cord injuries and the Victorian Respiratory Support Service (VRSS). In addition to this we are also specialists in cardiac surgery, neurosurgery, general medical, surgery and obstetrics ICU care.
ICU also provides the Critical Care Outreach Team who respond to and support patients who deteriorate or are at risk of deterioration in the inpatient areas. We have a strong teaching and research culture with our staff receiving recognition both nationally and internationally. We are proud of our strong multidisciplinary ICU team that values teamwork and collaboration and always puts the patient at the centre of everything we do.
About the role- The ICU Transition to Specialty Practice Program
Austin ICU is a level 3 tertiary unit providing complex, multisystem support to a broad range of patients including liver transplant, spinal injured patients, neuro surgical, cardiac, thoracic, general surgical and medical and liver failure. ICU also offers ward support via the Critical Care Outreach team. ICU has a strong research and teaching culture. ICU is currently operating on an ICU footprint of 29 operational beds.
We are seeking enthusiastic and highly motivated nurses to undertake the Transition to Specialty Practice (TSP) program. This is a 12-month program position, commencing in February 2026, which provides a guided and structured education program for high dependency and low to immediate acuity intensive care nursing. This offering is ideal for nurses with recent experience in acute medical and surgical nursing. This role involves working a rotational 24/7 roster.
The 12-month program follows a well-established professional development framework which supports transitional pathways to Intensive Care. The program is supported by the Clinical Education team who have a passion for supporting new learners and have a wealth of education experience delivering successful education programs.
