Koolkan Aurukun State School, established in 1974, is the only school in Aurukun, located on Cape York's west coast—11 hours' drive from Cairns and 2 hours south of Weipa. We educate around 200 students from Kindy to Year 12,
all active learners from rich cultural and linguistic backgrounds.
We are seeking five Deputy Principals to lead key reforms in the design and delivery of education services, driving improved outcomes for the young people of Aurukun. Our school is looking for resilient and compassionate leaders who are flexible in their thinking and adaptable to changing circumstances.

These transformational roles are temporary full-time positions for 12 months, commencing in Term
Living and working in Aurukun
Aurukun is a remote Indigenous community of around 1,300 people and the traditional country of the Wik, Wik Waya, and Kugu peoples. Wik Mungkan is the first language of most children. Staff living and working in Aurukun can access the Department's rural and remote benefits, including travel assistance, location allowances, and subsidised departmental housing.

About the Roles
All Deputy Principals will
- Work closely with the Principal to successfully develop the quality of teaching and learning by implementing Departmental priorities in teaching and learning, managing human, financial facilities and resources of the school programs to achieve goals.
- Be futures oriented, strategic and actively participate in lifelong learning and ongoing professional development.
- Understand the legislation and policies that impact on schooling especially in relation to students and staff within the school department.
- Deputise for the Principal when required and uphold the Deputy Principalship as a values based, ethical and moral activity.
- Provide internal teaching relief as required.
- These roles will be non-teaching roles, however as the need arises you will be required to provide internal relief.
As Deputy Principal - Curriculum you will
Lead the school community in the continuous improvement in educational outcomes for school students at Koolkan Aurukun SS with a focus on language, literacy and numeracy.
As Deputy Principal - Inclusion, you will
This role leads school community through the school's special education program (SEP) or early childhood development program (ECDP) to develop, articulate and commit to a shared educational vision focussed on providing quality learning outcomes for all students specifically those with disabilities.
As Deputy Principal - Engagement, you will
Lead the school community to nurture positive relationships between students, teachers and community through multi-teired support sytems, case management and implementation of whole school Positive Behaviour for Learning systems.
As Deputy Principal - Primary, you will
Improve the educational outcomes of students in the Kindergarten - Year 6 primary schooling through whole-of-school intensive support.
Deliver a proactive and preventative framework that integrates data and instruction to maximise student achievement and support the social, emotional and behaviour needs of students from a strengths-based perspective.
As Deputy Principal - Secondary, you will
Improve the educational outcomes of students in their secondary schooling years, through whole-of-school intensive support.
Deliver a proactive and preventative framework that integrates data and instruction to maximise student achievement and support the social, emotional and behaviour needs of students from a strengths-based perspective.
