The Department of Justice and Community Safety is seeking an Senior Prison Officer to provide a critical role at Beechworth Correctional Centre.

About the Business Unit

Corrections Victoria is a business unit of the Department of Justice and Community Safety (DJCS). Corrections Victoria's vision is 'Safer prisons, safer people, safer communities'. Our mission is to have 'A safer, smarter system with a skilled and supported workforce, that enables people in our care to make better decisions'. The Beechworth Correctional Centre is a minimum-security facility with a focus on preparing individuals for release and successful reintegration back into society. It offers various working industries with the men given the opportunity to gain knowledge and skills that will effectively link them to employment on release. When not engaged in work, the men attend rehabilitative programs to address their offending behaviour, engage in education and visits whilst many also engage in recreation and community assistance programs.

About the Role

Senior Prison Officers take a lead role within custodial teams, coaching, mentoring and supporting prison officers. A senior prison officers' role encompasses a range of teamwork, case management, custodial and security responsibilities. Senior Prison Officers can be responsible for the day to day management of prisoner accommodation.

Some of your duties will include:

  • Coordinate the day-to-day operations of a team of Prison Officers.
  • Work with all members of the prison to ensure the safety and security of prisoners, staff and visitors. This includes maintenance of the integrity of both the external and internal security of the facility, appropriate levels of surveillance and interaction within the facility, and ensuring compliance with security and safety procedures.
  • Manage a case load of offenders, including more difficult and complex offenders, in accordance with the requirements of offender management practices, liaising with the various Clinical, Vocational, Personal Development and Reintegration Service staff, to meet the identified needs of offenders.
  • Operate as a team leader by participating in the performance management process, delivery of training, coaching and support to prison officers in prisoner assessment, case management, and program and service knowledge. This also includes involvement in the development and maintenance of professional boundaries, security management, and classification procedures.

About you

To be successful in this role, you will have:

  • Ability to effectively use departmental computer systems for basic word processing, email, appointment scheduling, and internet and intranet functions.

Qualifications/requirements

  • Completion of the Corrections Victoria Prison Officer Pre-Training Program.
