Job Description: Fitter Machinist

Overview

We are seeking a skilled Fitter Machinist to join our engineering team. In this role, you will expertly set up and operate machine tools, fabricate metal components, and carry out precision fitting tasks to support manufacturing, maintenance, and custom metalwork operations. Your strong mechanical skills and attention to detail will be critical to ensuring high-quality outcomes and operational efficiency.

Key Responsibilities

● Set up and operate machine tools such as lathes, milling machines, grinders, drill presses, and saws to manufacture or repair metal parts to specified tolerances.

● Read and interpret engineering drawings, technical specifications, and fabrication plans to guide machining, drilling, grinding, and finishing operations.

● Perform precision fitting tasks, including alignment, assembly, welding, grinding, and finishing of mechanical components to produce finished products or assemblies.

● Select and use appropriate measuring instruments such as Vernier calipers, micrometers, dial indicators, and gauges to ensure accuracy and quality.

● Conduct regular maintenance, inspection, and minor adjustments on machines, tools, and equipment to ensure safe, continuous operation.

● Collaborate effectively with engineers, fabricators, and production staff to troubleshoot issues, recommend improvements, and solve mechanical problems.

● Ensure compliance with safety standards, workplace procedures, and quality control protocols, maintaining a clean and organized work environment.

● Maintain accurate work records, including production logs, maintenance reports, and quality documentation.

● Assist with training junior tradespeople or apprentices and share best practices to enhance team skill and performance.

Qualifications & Experience

● Trade qualification (Certificate III or equivalent) in Fitting, Machining, or Engineering – or demonstrated relevant experience in a fitting or machining role.

● Minimum of 2–4 years' experience in setting up and operating machine tools, performing fitting and fabrication tasks, and adhering to quality standards.

● Strong mechanical aptitude and practical skills in machining and fitting techniques.

● Experience working with hand tools, power tools, welding equipment, and machine tools in a workshop or production environment.

● Familiarity with measurement instruments and the ability to accurately interpret technical drawings and specifications.
