Job description:

Who is VAGO?

The Victorian Auditor General's Office (VAGO) is a critical part of Victoria's integrity system. Independent to Parliament, VAGO ensures the accountability of the State Government through audits and assurance reviews of public sector agencies. To achieve this, VAGO annually conducts over 530 financial audits and numerous performance audits across a diverse range of portfolios including infrastructure, transport, health and social services, education, water, local government, insurance, justice, treasury and superannuation. Such a broad range of portfolios allows our people to gain unrivalled audit experience working throughout Melbourne and regional Victoria.

Why VAGO?

Our organisation is filled with people who love what they do, enact change and uphold our values. We are a workforce of highly motivated, empathetic and collaborative people, who encourage innovation and knowledge sharing.

We strive to build and maintain an inclusive workplace that brings out the best in our people. We encourage and celebrate our diversity, and actively support work life balance and flexibility across all our roles.

We have two audit portfolios within VAGO: Parliamentary Reports and Services and Financial Audit. Our audit support function is split into the Office of the Auditor-General and Corporate Services.

What's the role?

Senior Managers at VAGO are dynamic, adaptable leaders who motivate and coach others to achieve their work goals. They are responsible for the delivery of a portfolio of financial audits within a government sector and will perform the engagement leader or team leader roles on selected audits.  Senior managers may also manage and deliver business improvement initiatives and write reports to Parliament.

VAGO's Senior Managers are rigorous and innovative in their approach to work and are motivated by the challenge of promoting continuous improvement in the Victorian public sector. They create opportunities for others to learn and develop, while actively pursuing their own professional development goals.

Who we're looking for

The ideal candidate communicates effectively, providing clear and accurate explanations while translating complex technical concepts into easily understandable terms for a diverse range of stakeholders. They demonstrate initiative and sound judgement when managing projects, responding to issues, and knowing when to escalate matters appropriately. With a strong analytical mindset and professional scepticism, they are able to process technical concepts and reason through problems effectively. They embrace innovation and are open to change, actively promoting a culture of inquiry by sharing their learning and knowledge with others.

They adopt an adaptive and professional approach to building and maintaining relationships, responding proactively to emerging trends, risks, and opportunities. Within a team, they contribute to fostering a sense of common purpose and work collaboratively. They model collegiate, resilient, and flexible work behaviours, and are deeply committed to their continuous professional development, ensuring they remain at the forefront of their field.

Don't tick all the boxes? You don't need to tick all the boxes to be amazing.  We'd still love to hear from you.

Qualifications

  • A sound working knowledge of Australian Accounting and Auditing Standards, legislative and regulatory requirements.
  • Must hold a full professional membership with CPA Australia, CAANZ or the IPA.
  • Experience undertaking audits or complex investigations, inquiries, or reviews.
  • Tertiary qualifications in Finance, Accounting, Science, Technology, Economics or Mathematics.
